When did PCMCIA 32 bit come out

I am trying to install my old laptop in my car. Compaq Preserio 1800. I bought this laptop in 1999/2000. I just bought a pcmcia card and my laptop does not even recognize it. I tried a different pcmcia card that my roommate uses and it still does not recognize. The only car it recognizes is a broken compaq wireless card that came with the computer. Is this because the motherboards only supports 16 bit. I wanna make sure - when did the 32 bit pcmcia card become available in the market. Thank you

That's rather strange...it should support 32bit cards... I don't know exactly when they came out, but PCI came out in 1994, so I'd guess around 1994-1996 for laptop PC cards...

It's probably some other factor, such as drivers, or maybe the OS...

There is infact nore than 1 type of PCMCIA card, Type 1, Type 2 and others.

you probebly have a older one :(

Yes, it's most likely OS related. I believe some of the 1800 series came with Windows Me on it. Is yours? If it is, make sure it's compatible to your OS and has the proper drivers.

My laptop came with win 98 se. But I have XP running right now. After some research I have found out that windows may have problems recognizing pcmcia cards. Solution to that is downloading xp service pack 2. I am downloading that onto my laptop now. Takes for ever, hopefully it works after the download is complete
