When Do I Start Buying?

Well, I'm in the market for a new build, but I just don't know whether to take a leap of faith with Intel and buy the Conroe straight when it comes out, or wait...

I want to see what AMD has in store, but I don't want to wait to find out that it's rubbish compared to Conroe...

So I thought I would ask you guys what to do. When should I start buying?

Then why didn't you? You've just built a new system, right? what made you go for AM2 rather than Conroe? (Yes, I know AM2 is a socket and Conroe is a CPU)

because my dad wouldnt let me spend that much money on a new system and the one i am getting isnt dualcore but atleast hes letting me build one. My dad has just ordered the parts for it so it should be here next week. Anyway i still think you should buy Conroe.

Is there any reasoning behind that opinion?

Because it beats out AMD in most benchmarks and i dont think that AMD has anything planned until 2007 or 2008 but i could be completely wrong about that.

Have AMD mentioned any CPU's to counteract the Conroe recently? Wouldn't they have released some info on the new CPU they are making if they were within any timeframe of releasing it?

I would wait a few days or however long it takes to hear that Conroe is indeed at least close to what was expected from it (and bench's). Once everything is confirmed as being just fine with them, no problems or anything, go ahead and order.

You would probably be fine ordering them the first day they appear for retail, but the above is what I would do if I was planning on going Conroe. Best of luck.

ye i was gona build an amd build last month, but from all the hype and what every1 has said on there forums, and from looking at the benchmarks, ive held back a month or so and im now gona go for a intel conroe build.

Go with conroe, Kicks serious booty

Amd is reducing prices by a very large margin in 11 days!

Which shows that their CPU's aren't going to be as good as the Conroe. I've been doing some research about it, and apparently it's meant to be very cheap.

It's only the dual-cores that are dropping in price correct? I'm planning on going with an Athlon 3500+ AM2...would that be affected at all?

On Newegg, the Athlon 64's are already dropping in price. The 3500+ is only $109.

The X2's are gonna go down probably after Conroe is released.

:)

this is a future predicting question but anyone have any ideas about AM3 ? if someone builds a system AM2 then when AM3 comes out can one still use the mobo and ram or will it need all new components ? and aslo will it compete with conroe ? i'm sure they try to at least.

I am sure it will give Conroe a run for it's money. However, if they put a big price mark on their AM3 CPU's, people won't be as inclined to buy one. That's why Conroe has been hyped up so much - it's going to have a reasonable price tag for great performance.

EDIT:

Here's a link stating that AM3 CPU's will work in AM2 Sockets:

when i was looking into either intel or amd, i just bought my case, psu, video card, hdd, opitial drives before, leaving the parts that matter what brand u went with for a later purchased.

Guys, do you think I should stick with buying a Conroe, even when the X2 3800 will go down to about $160?

I mean, think about it... For $160, thats very good performance... Or I can pay $316 (but it would be much more because of the high demand) and get the E6600 version of Conroe.

Whaddya think?

EDIT: I mean, Conroe is not going to drastically change the way my computer would work. It would be a few seconds faster, a few more frames per second. We're not talking 50+ FPS difference (or are we? :P). For $160, I'm sold at an X2 3800, unless you guys can show me why...

EDIT 2: Just read the Conroe 1.86 Ghz is better than the X2 3800. So I might as well get that one :P
