When Gaming, Why do people care so much about FPS?

I know you are probably thinking this is a stupid question, But seriously, Its just a number. As long as the game runs smoothly I'm happy. Do people just want to brag about what their system can do?

I personally can't tell the difference between 45 and 60 FPS, so what does it matter?

I just want to know everybodies thoughts and opinions. :P

not necessarily a "hey, i have a better rig." having good fps is pretty important, at least for me, in order to enjoy a game. even with great gameplay, if i am lagging at all it really makes me not like the game. i might be delusional, but 45 fps and 60 fps really are different experiences. i can usually tell if my frames drop to the 45 range if i have been playing at 60+ for a while...

I've only owned one machine that could do that. More than Likely, I would say I'm not used to it?

I care about my FPS if I dip below 60 on most games. After 60fps, the human eye cannot tell the difference.

Thats why monitors are set at a 60Hz refresh rate.

Mine does 75hz :D and it is much smoother when doing stuff like moving explorer windows and drag boxes around, I'm so used to 75hz that 60hz hurts my eyes after a while.

oh, did not know that. :o

It really depends on the game. Some games have very steady game play where FPS doesn't jump up and down, and to me, if its steady at all times at say... 40 fps, than it doesn't really concern me that much. What bothers me are games that will run at 60fps most of the time, but when things get hectic drop to 30. It ruins the experience when at the climactic moment you realize your performance has dropped.

I find most single player, or online games like shooters or racing games are fine to run at like 45 fps, it doesn't bother me a whole lot. But when I play MMO's like WoW, it ticks me off when I enter a raid and feel like my FPS is slacking, because in those games, if your performance slacks just a bit, it shows in the numbers, DPS and such.

Fluidity.

The more frames that are generated, the more inputs from the keyboard and mouse are translated into action that you see on screen, resulting in more fluid motion.

This might be a bad comparsion, But Being a Call of Duty player (on xbox 360) where the game runs a 60FPS, and going to BFBC2 or Halo? (which run at 30fps.)

Somewhat like that, although some people will be able to notice above a 60fps framerate due to the fact motion is more fluid. The majority of people will not be able to notice the difference above a 60fps rate of play.

And back to your original question...higher framerates are a form of bragging, which is one reason why some people will outfit themselves with overkill hardware.

well i am happy with anything over 100fps, maybe i cant tell the difference etc etc but if i can get 100fps on bc2 with everything maxed out too limits ill be happy.

i have just sold all my system because i was getting 35fps on bc2 with everything maxed.

my cpu was a crippling mt gtx 460 so i sold the lot, dropping in my new rig a i7 860 with 4gig ddr3 1600mhz ram and 2xgtx 460 1gb so im hopping ill get overkill fps

im going overkill because i want nice and smooth gameplay without noticing frame drop etc etc
