when i get my quad?

hey guys, when the price drops and i build my rig should i overclock it right away to the furthest since i have water cooling or should i leave it at 2.4 untill i really need it, which prob wont be till a while, and on somee people threads i dont know if it is true but it overclocks less then it will when its new, this computer is going to last me a long time. so will my quad core overclock the same if i waited a year as in if i overclocked it right away?

Wait till an OC would benefit.

The C2d will OC the same in a year unless you do something stupid, like pouring a can of Coke on the Motherboard. While it's on. And then throwing it out the window to see if that would fix it.

The Moral? Never pour Coke on your motherboard.
 
the 680i has overclocking profile so you can use stock speed when you dont need it and use it when you need to. or you can use tat to change the clock speed.
 
thats just stupid.. why would u overclock a quad core and void the warrenty soon as u get it?? what are u planning to do with this pc?? launch missiles in iraq?... its a quad core! its plenty fast enough to play any game or perform any task.. and if u find in a years time it doesnt keep up (which i doubt) then overclock it..
 
i would overlock it as soon as it arrives.

1. it is cheaper now
2. there are more people with quad core and overlock them than you think there is.
3. check overclocking forums, majority of overlockers overlock core 2 duo and quads.

i mean even people that pay full price when it first release for almost 1000 still planned on overlocking it.

you get the money worth making it go faster than running it stock. who cares about warranty, most of us will change processor before it ran ouf of warranty or the cpu dies from the overclocking anyways :D
 
yeah because their noobs.. why would u overclock it straight away?? for wat reason?? only shortens their lifespan thats if u dont blow it in the proccess.. trust me u would care about warrenty if a week later u found out it was faulty
 
i overclock because difference between 2.4ghz and 3.6ghz is REALLY noticable.

windows open faster and apps lanuch faster. not only benchmarks but everything else. going back from stock speed is like downgrading from a broadband to dialup literally. overclocking dont cost any extra money anways unless you plan to keep that chip for the rest of your life. :)
 
yeah but hes talking about a quad core.... its the best u can buy, it would be like putting a turbo on a ferrari.. u just dont need to do it
 
is still gonna perform like a dual core for now unless you run it on nuclearus or something. i dont know about you guys but i'm gonna clock it until i hit a wall :D
 
yeah but i saw ur post on "post your pc" and u have like 50 top of the range pc's :P u can afford to blow one up and still have enough to declare new world order from ur bedroom:P
 
People over exaggerate about overclocking. Even if you raise the FSB and voltages too high, it simply wont boot, it's not going to make a big bang and plume out white smoke, lol.
 
i wouldnt overclock until you need too.
i mean i should think it will fly through things at the speed it is already:D
 
That's not the point. Who cares if it's "fast enough" when you can make it go faster? And most people aren't going to keep processors long enough for the "shortened life-time" to make any difference? If you don't want to do it, then don't, but I think it's a bit strange to try to stop others from going ahead....
 
I agree with shadow. There are so many regulars here that have a nice system, and they say they dont want to overclock their components because it will reduce their life, but they are upgrading every few months. I say overclock it as much as you can, that way you get more for your money :)
 
If he overclocks now the only difference he's gonna see is a faster boot time and maybe movie decoding and that kinda stuff. I mean really if you're already getting 60fps in CSS you can't physically see any more because your refresh rate throws the rest out the window.

Overclocking just for the sake of overclocking is dumb. If he sees' that he needs a boost in acouple months time then he should do it.. Until then I recommend OP make sure he's gotten this Ocing thing down, because how many people do we get through here that's gotten a problem while Ocing? It can be complicated and apart from popular opinion things can go wrong and you could maybe even (unlikely though) blow your CPU. :D
 
no ones trying to stop him he can do watever he wants but this is a forum.. were just giving him advice.. no need to overkill and heat things up if theres no need is all im saying... but meh its ur money do whatever u want with it.. but u will look stupid if u come on here saying u burnt ur quad out after trying to push the oc'ing too much too fast:)
