Guys I'm upgrading my friends computer it has onboard graphics. Its a AsRock n68-s ucc.

4 gb of ddr3 and an amd athlon ii x250.

The onbaord works fine but when I turn off the machine and slot in this new nvidia gt 720 1gb from msi I get a black screen. Thats whether I put the monitor lead in the onboard or the gpu. Still black screen in both.

Should I install the latest driver for the card before slotting it in?

Installing the driver would be nice, however Windows has make-shift ones. You need to plug the monitor into the GPU's ports from the rear.

Also verify in the bios that dedicated card is first to load not onboard. And as long as no power connector is needed and video card is good then you should get signal.
