When is the right time to buy the X2 4200+?

Well, with the AM2 socket coming out very soon, I am pretty sure 939 socket type CPU's will drop in prices. When is AM2 expected to be realised? All I know is that it is going to be soon. How much would you think should the processor drop in price? $20-$70 CAD? Do you think that when AM2 is released is the best time to buy the processor? And finally, are motherboards supporting 939 sockets and DDR400 Memory going to drop in price as well?

it'll be released sometime this year... don't get the 4200+ its just 200mhz faster than the x2 3800+ and the x2 3800+ costs $60 less.
thats $60 you could spend on more ram.
btw get 2 1gb sticks... its worth it... especially with windows vista coming up soon.
tried a pre-release trial version, i must say it uses a LOT of ram!
my vista tryout has made me decide to upgrade my hard drives. im getting a raid 0 array soon..
dono what hdd's ill use yet, and how many yet :)
probably 2-4 80gb 7200rpm hdds though.
 
fade2green and i have this thing... he thinks the 200Mhz is a waste of money... i think it can be helpfull...

I agree with both of you. I would pay $60 for another 200Mhz... plus it sounds cooler to say 4200+, than 3800+ ;)
 
well, i think the processor is good at what it needs to be good at.. multithreaded processor-intensive apps. the $60 can be spent on a better video card, or even a good cooler for the thing that way you can o/c it past 4800+ speeds.
or, as i've already suggested, more ram.
the X2 3800+ is a budget chip... and by the way he wanted the 4200+ it sounded like he wanted a budget system...
if it's not a budget system i highly suggest the 4400+ or the 4800+.

also, note that the X2 3800+ is easily overclockable to a 4600+ on stock cooling with maybe one step up on vCore if any voltage is needed at all. i know i got mine at 2.4ghz easily, no overvolt at all and 24hrs+ prime stable.

the X2 3800+ overclocks just as high as the 4200+ theyre the same chip different model #
i've said this like a million times..
i got mine to 2.6ghz fairly easily, needed a bit of overvoltage but seems like its running fine at decent temps for a new silver 5 application...
of course 2.4ghz required no overvolt (stable), proving that it is in fact the same as the other athlon 64 X2's

omg Encore4More, you sure are a n00b when talking about OC'ing the X2 cpu's.

3800+ and 4200+ are the exact same chips
4200+ is an overclocked 3800+ (guaranteed to run at that speed)

Let's say you OC'ed a 3800+ to 2.4 GHz and then you say,

"Well, if I bought a 4200+ it would be running at 2.6 GHz", <= that's not true

or

You've reached the limit, 3800+ is OC'ed to 2.6 and won't go past it,

"Oh man, I should have bought 4200+, it would be at 2.8 GHz now" <= Incorrect

Ask someone who has a 3500+ how much has he managed to OC it, I've got mine up to 2.9 GHz at 1.6V

You are being confused by some things.

is it guarenteed to work at 2.2GHz? or 200MHz higher?

and if it is a "guarenteed" version, and it is "guarenteed" to work at 2.2GHz that would assume the the 3800+ is not... which means that there must be some difference between the physicall processor...

Yes I am interested in some light overclocking, probably a 400MHz overclock MAX. I am also getting 2GB of RAM in dual channel. Corsair Value Select DDR400. For my graphics card, I am getting an eVGA 7900GT CO Overclocked to 550MHz (Stock 450MHz). My motherboard will be the Asus A8N-SLI. All that with a exellent power supply from Antec (34A +12v) and other stuff come up to around $1540 CAD.

Either get the X2 3800+ or the X2 4400+, 4200+ isn't worth it.

You can get 2.4 GHz out of that 3800+ with ease and without overvolting, ask fade2green.
 
You both are wrong.

The difference between the X2 3800+ and X2 4200+ is the multiplier, the 4200+ has a higher multiplier, which gives it a higher clock speed.

And the 4200+ will be generally be able to overclock higher than the 3800+, due to the higher multiplier.

omg, well of course the multi is higher, all AMD's 64 have a FSB of 200 MHz.
