Hey guys
I was wondering when do you think that blu ray drives wil come pre installed on computers. I think that it will be soon like maybe with in the next year to year and a half
 
Some laptops have already started having them. It was a bit higher priced, but not bad (around $1000). That particular model came out about 2 months ago, and I expect it to be pretty standard within the next year, possibly even 6 months now that the format ware is over.
 
yeah I think that mac will be the first to have them pre installed on their desktop models though, i don't think that Microsoft is that advanced yet
 
It will happen whenever the price of BD roms gets down close enough to the price of DVD that it will allow computer manufacturers to be competitive with it. As to a time frame, anyone's guess is as good as mine.

Well considering microsoft doesnt even sell pc's..... and so far osx doesnt support bluray as far as i know, and i have seen some pc's for sale with blueray drives in em, albeit more expensive models. Im thinking of getting a bluray drive for my computer now that they are down to ~$100 for a reader....

It is already happening, most Sony desktops and laptops come with one by default on their higher end. Once the cost goes down and they get cheaper the demand will go up and that will drive the cost down even more because people will buy more of them in bulk and so will manufacturers.

A CD burner was once $1000, and a DVD burner was once $1000. I don't think you can buy a CD burner any more and a DVDRW drive is under $30.

Yeah thats what I meant I was just talking general PC's
 
It will happen soon enough. Blu-Ray drives will go down in price over the next couple years, and by then they will be standard issue drives.

Yeah but I mean even though we could put them in our PC'S would software distributors change to blu ray disks?

This is something I just thought of actually

A Blu-Ray disc is substantially less cost effect than a CD or a DVD for manufacturers. I don't think we'd be seeing this happen unless prices for Blu-Ray going way down.
 
Well, another consideration not mentioned yet is the licensing costs to OEMs. For them to put a BluRay drive in their machine, they have to pay for that "privilege". You can get computers configured with them now, but I think we are still a few years off from it being standard for several reasons.

For example:
- As i mentioned, licensing. This is changing though.
- Most people have no need for BluRay and are quite content with CD/DVD technology. Look how long it took game publishers to start using DVDs for distribution instead of selling you a box of a dozen CDs. :)
- Related to the above: adoption rates.
- The cost of the technology. Coming down...coming down...
 
there could be a fight against that though because there are people that like to play games on the best screen blu ray provides that

Do elaborate, please.

Blu-Ray has nothing to do with playing games "on the best screen". If you are referring to high-definition monitors/televisions, Blu-Ray offers content that will use those displays' capabilities. Other media and software can also be used on high definition displays.
