Ok, so im looking to buy a new computer. and i was wondering if i should buy it now? or wait a little for the back to school sales to go into full swing. Also should i purchase those premade ones or assemble one for myself. My budget is around 700 and im mainly looking for something to use at school, music what not and gaming. Uhm i have a copy of xp and a monitor. let me know what you guys think? Im trying to find a affordable build as we speak.

Thanks for all the help.

For $700 you can get a much better machine building it yourself, much higher quality parts also. I realy dont think it will matter if you wait, i dont the the prices on computer components are going to drop much if any between now and then.

If you need help picking parts out if you decide to build yourself just let us know ;)

Thats a decent graphics card, if you realy want to crank games up you would need to go cheaper the cpu/hdd, but its up to you

I just read the 101 about overclocking and it seems a little intense for me. But i have always had intel and to me intel always seemed the bigger and better choice. is this true?

its up to you, i have no preference but others i think will swear to intel. Between those two i dont think you would be able to tell the difference, so...

Since he's going to be using Windows XP isn't getting a DX10 card pointless?
Here's another option you could do, I used alot of the same parts that ThatGuy16 did, but I swapped a few out.
CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819115003
MOBO

RAM

GPU

HDD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16822148140
PSU
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2974500&CatId=106
OPTICAL
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16827151145
CASE
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16811119115
Total without shipping and taxes (if any) $723.83

It's a little over, but it has a really good processor, and the GPU, although cheaper, can perform better in DX9 games then the 8600 GT.
It also includes a nice case. You could always bump down the processor to get a better graphics card as ThatGuy16 suggested for his build

Its not really filled up with bugs. I got it 2 days after release and never had a problem with it. To tell you the truth I think personally Vista is better than XP

I like vista better than xp, i was unsure the first few days but i love it now. If you buy an OS get vista 64bit...

Hey if your going with the e6600 just go to e6750 and find a mobo that supports 1333 FSB.... They are the new intel processors and they are much faster in my opinion. And they are around the same price
