Where did i go wrong installing RAM...

I know how to install RAM so i went out and upgraded my current 1gb (512MBx2 DDR2 266mhz) to 2GB (1GB x 2 PC2-5300 333mhz) i installed the new ram sticks in 2 blue slots, booted up, pc deteced it well BOOM! errors with my game, and other applications. Mostly "Run dll as an App" and memory could not be written or read errors. :(

After feeling lost of what i have done. i research the internet for clues(IE kept closing down after 5 mins so had to be quick) they say do the "sfc /scannow" to help replace corrupt files, but when i run it my desktop goes to windows 98 theme and restarts the PC.

Now i feel i have no choice but to put old RAM back in. I do this and everything still has its errors but the PC doesnt restart from blue screens errors.

I now reinstall or windows back to its orgrinal settings to when i bought the PC but keeping my user settings and programms i had. I notice my GPU control panel wouldn't open so i reinstalled the drivers and to my shock it worked again.

I have lost all confidence in installing RAM again but i wish i could find out why the RAM upgrade pissed my windows up.

I have a 8800gts 640mb and AMD 5000+ 2.6mhz... Please help  :D

do you have 4 ram slots dual channel ram?

if so you put 1 ram stick in each color

did you take your old out?
is one of the ram sticks bad?

I have 4 slots yes but my MOBO dont support duel channeling... Anyway after googling around i find bad RAM and make files corrupt and therefore give the errors.

So everything i ran with the bad ram would of went corrupt and mess up.

Even when i took out the faulty ram chip i still got the errors, this must show it caused pernament damage to my files.

You need to check in your bios and make sure the new memory is running at the correct/default voltage and timing.

Thanks for the replies i appreciate it :D... My RAM is compatible according to crucial... They say each slot can hold 1GB and can take speed of PC2-5300 upto DDR2. "Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot."- Crucial Site.

My BIOS doesnt have options to edit RAM voltages and timings, its crap and i gave it a an update of the HP site.

do you still have the original RAM in? if so the 4 sticks may not be matched, so 2 will worked together, the other 2 will work together, but all 4 will not. The speed difference doesn't matter, both will just work at the lowest one.

Download memtest, google it, click the top one, download the bootable .iso file and burn it to a disc. Put it in your drive at bootup and boot from cd and let it run for a few hours, if it comes up with even 1 or 2 errors in that time chances are your RAM is corrupt, this would exlain it, you would need new RAM because that would be useless if it is coupng data.

Check your PSU, if it doesn't have high enough wattage/ampage then you will see several problems coming up, including RAM problems and possibley graphics card issues too.

The RAM may not be compatible with the motherboard. just because the site or manual says it doesn't mean it can support it. Take 2 sticks that aren't working out so your system is stable and go to the manufacturer website and check for bios updates. If your bios is outdated then chances are the 'top' RAM won't work, i had the same issue about a week ago when I went from 2 slots to 4 filled, i was a year out of date  . Updated bios and then it was fine. If you are going to update your bios though (this is VERY IMPORTANT) make sure you read up on it, know what you are doing and make sure your system is stable, if it stalls/shuts down part way through you could be screwed, but because it is so quick ,the chances are this won't happen, hardly does.

There are a few possibilities for you to mull over there, hope one of em solves your problem;)
