Where to buy PC parts

I'm looking into getting a new computer, and I think I want to build my own, because of how much cheaper it will be.
I'm not very savvy when it comes to computers, so I honestly don't know what I'm doing.
I would be much more comfortable going into Best Buy and having a sales rep. help me pick each individual part. I looked at Amazon.com and I have no idea what I'd be paying for in terms of the quality of the products.
I have a set budget, so I was wondering.. How much more could I get out of $600 if I ordered the parts from Amazon or Newegg ,than if I went to Best Buy?

You would get much better parts. Best buy is not even a laughable option in building a computer. What are your needs for this computer?

That sucks. :/
Oh well, I'm sure people on here will be more helpful than anyone employed by Best Buy anyways. :)

I'm looking to do some not-so-serious gaming on it, such as World of Warcraft and League of Legends. I'm not into the first person shooters that require the high-end graphics cards to run at optimal frame rate, so I don't need the best.
But it would be nice to play WoW at 50ish FPS. I'm pretty sure $600 will get me there, am I wrong?

You left out the hard drive I think.
Thanks for doing that though :)
Do you think Newegg would give me more for my dollar than Amazon?

I just thought of something....
The computer that I'm taking the optical drive from is my old desktop, which we bought a separate DVD reader for, because the stock piece only read CDs.
Everything else is stock. The computer is a Dell Dimension 2350. Would any of the other parts be salvageable? I know the hard drive is 30gb, so that's worthless, but what about the mother board? Or anything else? How good would any of it be?

Probably not as any drives from a computer that old are IDE, rather than SATA. SATA is newer and faster and is not backward compatabile with IDE. That computer is pretty much not salvageable, at all. Sorry. :(

The rig in my sigcost me around 600-650 dollars with an OS as part of that price. I waited for some sales through Newegg email newsletters. You should sign up for those. They saved me probably around a $100. If I were you and you had the cash, I would suggest upgrading to a Radeon 6850. The 5770 or 6770 (same card, just rebranded) are great cards but if you have the extra cash go ahead and get a 6850.

Newegg is best place to buy computer parts. Amazon and Tigerdirect are decent too but Newegg is still the best. I price checked all of my components and they were always cheaper at Newegg.

Best of luck!

Awh, boo :/
Oh well.... The Optical drive, I know I can def. use, it's only a couple years old.
Thanks for the advice. :)
Just to confirm... The build that claptonman put together previously on this thread will all function properly together, correct? I plan on ordering all of the parts that he listed tomorrow, save the optical drive, and including the hard drive that he posted in the post following the initial build.
A concern of mine: how will I connect it to the internet? I discovered that most motherboards have integrated Ethernet cards, which will cover a cabled internet connection. Does the one he listed have this? If I decide that I want to move the computer to a separate room, and go wireless on it, what will I need to buy?
Finally, if it does have the integrated Ethernet card, as mentioned above, will my standard cable that came with my X Box that I use to connect it to the internet work to connect the computer to the internet?
I know there are a lot of questions here, and it's sort of a lot to read, so I appreciate the fact that you have read this far, and answers to any and all questions would be appreciated. :)

Yes, it will work. But is the optical drive IDE or SATA? If its IDE, it won't work because the board I posted doesn't have any IDE ports since its a newer board and few hard drives/optical drives have them. Optical drives are only $20, so its not that big of a deal.

Yes, it has an ethernet port. I have the same board, as you can see. The cable you use for the xbox will work, its a standard ethernet cable. You will need to install the drivers that come with your motherboard for the internet to work. Also be sure to update to the latest drivers for your video card.

You will need a wireless receiver if you want to go wireless. You can get one that you plug into your motherboard like a video card, or just a wireless USB. They're about the same speed, so the USB is the easiest way to go.

Good luck on the build and don't hesitate to ask questions on here if you have trouble.

Yeah, I know they aren't expensive, so I'm not worried about it. :)
This is exciting, my first home built computer. :)
Thank you for all your help. If I have any questions this will be the first place I go :)
