Where to cut back, and not have problems?

I've been fooling around with my ideas of computer parts for awhile now. And to save money, where would you "cut back" so to speak. I keep findng cheaper and cheaper cases that I like, but where else could you go that will save you money, yet still yield you a very good PC (for gaming, music storage etc etc). I know you dont want to skimp on motherboard, cpu, and gpu.

I would watch things like SHIPPING prices which can sneak up on you. 3 orders from diferent astores save you 25$ but costs you extra in the long run. When buying the computer do it all in one swoop/order.
