Where to get Retail HDDs?

Both Tigerdirect and Newegg only have OEM hard drives.
Where do I get a retail hard drive?

Just wondering... do you need a retail HDD? OEM ones are just as good, and the stuff that comes with retail ones isnt all that great.

What comes with a retail hard drive? I've only ever bought OEM's. It has the drive, what else do you need?

I don't trust OEM stuff.
Yes, nice to get a new cable.

OEM is perfectly fine. It's exactly the same as retail drives, except its not pre-packaged. There not used in anyway, and besides OEM drives are ALOT cheaper then retail drives.

TOO was right, Newegg does sell retail drives. There just so expensive you have to look for them at the very last page :P

Retail box HDDs kick ass. They're so much faster. That's why they're so much more effective. If you want to hang on a second I'll cut and paste something I found on Google about the 10MB/s throughput performance enhancement on the latest HDDs (and this isn't even software, ladies and gentlemen, it's hardware). Typically they come with a custom drive interface so that they fit nicely into IBM builds.

That pretty box sitting on the shelf as seen here also cuts your seek times down by an average 1.4 seconds by the 3400+ Athlon sitting here waiting to be tested after frying two boards in an AST.

Oh, here we go. I found the related link:

From its starting performance of 5MB/sec to its current performance of 320MB/sec, SCSI has continued to evolve through seven generations.

Disk drive performance has been increasing 37% per year. Drives introduced in 2002 have a sustained transfer rate of 68MB/sec. In 2003, they will reach 93MB/sec; in 2004, 127MB/sec; in 2005, 175MB/sec; and in 2006, they are projected to reach 238MB/sec.

Do I have an Eye for quality postings or what?

Ok, no seriously, OEM is destined to Original Equipment Manufacturers. They're the drives I buy when I'm building boxes for clients. I don't need the pretty boxes, but I do need to save money. They come with the same warranty, but I am obligated to support the client through the first year of warranty. I don't see the big deal though, as manufacturers will accept them direct from the purchaser.

SirKenin, in what you quoted, I don't see anything that directly relates to OEM vs Retail drives. Unless you were being sarcastic in the top part of the post... it's hard to tell.

You missed it?!?!?! I can't believe you missed it!! Holy shit I must have seriously lost my touch this morning. Are you saying I need more Coke? :P

If you threw a "haha, no seriously..." in there, it deffinetly would have made it seem more sarcastic :P

Oh :( Well, I'm still working on the Coke. Give me some time to get warmed up. I thought that was pretty good for a first effort though.. You gotta hand me some kind of props. :)
