Where to house files and programs?

When I had my computer, eventually a problem developed with System Restore where I lost my restore points. From investigation, I determined that the most likely cause was the hard drive being filled up.

I'm preparing to get another computer next year planning to keep programs and files on different hard drives (plus, of course, have backup software). I'm looking for information and advice on this to see how to use my computer to its fullest.

You didn't say but I'm guessing you plan to get a desktop computer. Many people today get an SSD as their boot/OS disk with a regular HDD as data storage. For instance, a 64G SSD would be plenty large to install your OS (depending on how much data you need to store) and something like a 500G HDD should do for data storage.

Agree with Strollin, except in addition to the SSd for a boot disk, I would get at least 2 HDDs. Important files get copies on both HDDs and in the event of HDD failure you still have copies of your important files.

I'm in agreement with the advice given so far

To add, I would keep the SSD at least 20% clear so that programs such as System Restore are operating at its most efficient (I only wish there were a program that would alert me when that drive goes beyond being 80% full - does Windows 7 have such a feature?).

There's time until I get my Ivy Bridge core i7 computer next year. I would go for Thunderbolt, but there seems to be too many catches with it so I'll settle for USB 3.0 for now.

Thanks for your help.
