Where to start?

I have not dabbled in this computer business for about four years; my old one is about to bite the dust, but as I replaced the motherboard with a used one, that has brought me some time.

I have been advised to get an AMD CPU, as they deliver the most value for performance, and was told to get a >750W PSU.

Are there any specifications I should look for when choosing a graphics card, motherboard, and CPU besides memory (gfx) or frequency (cpu)?

Finally, can anyone recommend a build? Money is not an issue, but I would prefer not to use completely top-of-the-line components since the components that they immediately replace tend to go down in price very quickly and may still be suitable. However, if the top-of-the-line components are the best value, so be it.

Thanks

Addendum: it is for gaming, Autodesk Inventor, and Maple 13 which is a RAM-hog.

CPU - for you use, best to go for Phemom IIx6 1055T ($200) is good value for money.
However, if money is not issue, go for core i7 950 ($300).

PSU - 750W is not necessary unless you run more than 1 video card. a quality 500 - 600W is usually enough.

If money is not issue, I recommend you get SSD (may be 60GB?) for programme and OS, than get SATA III for storage

Video card - Do you need a work station card?

I was advised to go with an AMD, as they are the best value for performance (that, and I dislike Intel). I then came up with this:
