Which AV?

For a retail product I tend to favor either Trend Micro's line or Grisoft's AVG Pro until the latest reports of apparently false alarms where apparently AVG both free and retails versions of the 7.5 and latest 8.0 reportedly removed different items over the last month or so. So far no indications of problems have been seen here in either XP or Vista with the free version of 8.0 on.

The free version of AVG 8.0 is available at http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe while the "failed to connect to server" error is seen at startup as of late apparently due to Grisoft's own look into the reported problems. Meanwhile the main page for the retail products they provide can be seen at http://www.avg.com/home-and-office-security

One program that works like a firewall by placing an active guard around the system registry is known as Spyware Terminator found at http://www.spywareterminator.com/ Comodo or Jetico Personal were often free firewalls preferred over Zone Alarm's free version ocnsiderably. But seeing Comodo getting a 55% poor rating is a let down for the 2.4 version.

As far as AVG is now concerned the false alarms and seeing certain Windows or other files like Flash Player removed seems only to have been isolated incidents for certain XP users who rushed to fill up some empty web pages. No one else has been seeing any problems with updates or full system scans.

I sell NOD32 at work and it is totally amazing.

I'm trying to see which is better: Avast! or NOD32. I was trying to get infected, but I couldn't. I don't know where to go :P

On one occasion some years back I was notified about the file attached to an odd email that came in out of nowhere was an I-Worm and I simply let it go to work. The earlier version of AVG at the time located and removed it as well as pointing out a non MS file I has stored on the drive as being changed. So much for that file when simply deleted.

I gave Avast a try some time back as well and was able to notice the antiphising filter while AVG still offered better system protection. Since then Grisoft has incorporated an updated version of Ewido a well known older spyware remover into the latest 8.0 build.

As an alternative for AVG the best ones are NOD32 and Kaspersky for the freeware av programs while retail sees Trend Micro along with AVG Pro.

A good number of people go for that one being a good program as well. But that's still a retail product when comparing Clam av, Win AntiVir, AVG, Avast which all see free versions. Along with Trend Micro's line those are relatively all good while programs like Norton and McAfee reach the bottom of the barrel.
