Ive sorted a computer but cannot decide the combination of processor and graphics card to take

Everything is exactly the same on both 1gb ram, 200 gb hard drive, dvd re-writer, same monitor sound card etc.

The only choice i have to make is which of the following two options to take

Pentium 4 540 with ATI Radeon X600 PRO 128mb

or

AMD Athlon 64 3400 with ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 128mb

1. Which Athlon64-3400 are you planning to get
2. You're bottle-capping both systems by their video cards (more so the Intel one)
3. Whats the budget and intent

The comp costs £828 inc VAT which is about as much as i can go. If i could afford a better graphics card i would. Intend to use the comp for gaming, writing dvds, cds, but no heavy graphics processing.

The difference in price for hard drive is negligable so reducing that or anything else in order to get a better graphics card isn't an option.

1. Whats the website
2. If they dont tell you whether its a socket939 or a socket754 then its prolly not a good idea to buy from there...

Its a socket 754. You should prolly rebalance the systems because both systems have some somewhat significant bottlenecks (for gaming, more so the intel system and for video, more so the amd)

what can i rebalance though, on the AMD system thats the best card available to me unless i spend another £200+, with the intel i can get a nVidia 6600 GT for an extra £80 which i can make up by reducing a few other things

Why not grab a P4-540/AMD Athlon64-3500 plus a 6600GT? :) (or scale down to P4-530/3400(S939))

i take it the 6600 GT will reduce the bottleneck then? i figure i might as well get the P4 540 as its only £30 more expensive than the P4 530, but if it isnt worth gettin the p4 540 because i wont use the extra 200mhz then i will save the money, they dont allow an option for amd with the 6600gt, its not the best website to buy from i know but its been recommended and is cheap, in the uk anyways i cant find any cheaper without buyin separates and building which i dont wanna do

Personally id get the 530 or 550 (550 because of the potentially unlocked multiplier) but ya, grabbing the 6600GT would definitely reduce the bottleneck
