which computer brands are worth getting?

I need some advice on buying a new desktop computer.. Ive been tryin to figure out which brand to go with Acer, Dell/Alienware, ASUS, HP, Sony, Toshiba or Gateway. I havent bought a new pc in years so I wanna know who to stay away from :D

HP Is terrible. Don't buy. Asus is good for laptops. And Dell is nice I guess. Gateways suck. Alienware is WAYY over priced. What are you going to be using the PC for? Just build your own. It'll save money. Or buy a cheap computer from ebay (419.00$ or so) and upgrade the card. :D
 
I bought a Dell about 7 years ago, and I'm still using it. It had one problem in all that time. I got the dreaded "Flashing Amber light" which is common for certain Dells from what I've read. It was caused by a dead/dying PSU, which I swapped out and all is well. Warranty and customer service are pretty crappy to be sure. I've upgraded this particular computer as far as I'm willing to go, but 7+ years of service is nothing to sneeze at.

I also have a Toshiba laptop, which I bought about 2 years ago. I don't use it as much as the desktop, but I've had no problems with it at all.

Having said all that, I agree that building your own is the way to go. I'm currently putting together a desktop for my parents (my first build), but given what I've learned so far, I'd never by pre-built again.
 
generally Dell, Asus are brands to go for. Gateway (and associated brands{aab}), HP (aab), and other less well known brands are ones to stay away from.
 
Also i bleieve acer aren't supposed to be the best. but building your own is the best, then cyberpowerpc and ibuypower are the cheapest, then it goes to quality where you want asus, dell, toshiba, lenovo, sony, and one or 2 other brands.

just no, acer aren't the best, supposedly have a high failure rate, then again low prices and cheap idiots can do that, but gateway aren't good either, the best are asus, then dell, and idk what the third would be
