which cpu should i get?

im building a budget gaming machine and i went with Intel, thats mistake #1 i know, since budget and Intel should never be used in the same sentence, but i already have the board and im not switching...

so ive narrowed it down to 2 cpus in the 120-130 dollar range.

the 2.4ghz pentium 4 with 800mhz FSB, Hyperthreading and a 512k L2 cache

or the 2.4 ghz P4 with 533 FSB, no HT and a 1mb L2 cache

these will be paired with 1gb pc-3200 in dual-channel mode.

any thoughts?

Grab the first one (NorthwoodC), a superior chip hands down :) (and the 2nd one, being a Prescott, should have HT)

ah i was under the impression that only the 800mhz FSB chips had the hyperthreading, thanks for the advice, i probably will get the northwood whenever i get some money, ive heard theyre extremely overclockable, but i may not need that for a while.

Hehe, actually the only Pentium (besides mobile) that has hyperthreading and a 533 FSB is the 3.06. The 2.4A is a prescott but it doesn't have hyperthreading. Unless someone can find one that proves me wrong...

As for the question though, definitely the 2.4C (the first one)

I JUST DONT KNOW WHO TO BELIEVE ANYMORE!!!

jk nah i would agree that only 800fsb chips have hyperthreading...so thats probably the one ill get

You're right, and Praetor is wrong  :P Although you are wrong on the FSB speed...its 133MHz. To my knowledge no 100MHz or 133MHz FSB P4 has hyperthreading

heehee good thing i said "should" :P ... stupid intel and their overlapping naming conventions ... mutter... grumble

1. its actually 200FSB
2. The 3.06 has HT and runs a 533 BUS :)

To my knowledge no 100MHz or 133MHz FSB P4 has hyperthreading
P4-3.06 runs on a 133MHz FSB

so it seems there is one P4 @133MHz FSB that has hyperthreading. The P4As (Prescotts) don't though

go

listen to praetor and cromwell. The winner of that fight should know the answer. I personally would go with the first one too.

Well between the two of us we managed to get it, I was right about the HT and technically right about the P4A-2.4 (although it wasnt what I intended to say so really I was wrong, but then again im not an Intel guy). Of course this isnt a competition or anything, let alone a fight.

I was really glad when I bought P4 2.3Ghz HT but then one of my friends (who's a programmer/ database creator) told me HT doesn't really do that much. :(

yeah ive heard that as well, but ive also heard that it could do good things if/when they start writing things geared toward it, same thing with PCI-E, alot of games cant take advantage of the extra bandwidth as well.
