which cpu to choose?

hello i have been going back and forth betwen cpus for somtime now. i kno it will a intel quad core. and i cannot afford the "extreme" ones. so i guess my choices range from the q6600 to the q9650? which gives the best bang for the buck? thanks!
 
If money really is not an object...then by all means get the biggest you can.

A good deal right now I think is the Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz. It's a 45nm design and from what I have read it's a good overclocker. The price is about $270 and it almost always comes with a free game. Some people will say go for the Q9550, which is a great processor, but the extra $50 for .17 GHz I think is a waste. You could run the Q9400 up around 3GHz without putting a lot of stress on it. That processor will last you a long time.
 
If you plan on keeping it awhile the q9550 also has a 8.5 multi and 12 mb L2 cache that the q9400 doesnt have so it may be worth the extra money if you are going to keep it a number of years.You will have to get a newer MB anyways so you might as well get something you can squeeze an extra year or so out of .IMO
 
I would honestly suggest overclocking though. An Oc'd q6600 (new stepping, G0 i believe) will do wonders for $/power.
