which CPU to choose ??

i have been looking at 3 pc systems and they all have different cpu's in them, the cpu's are :

pentiom D dual core 2.80ghz
intel core 2 duo e6300
athlon 64 x2 dual core

all are around the same price. which one would be the fastest and most reliable of the above in your experince ?
any help with this will help me choose the right system for me.

i generally use pc for internet, some games though not many ! and downloading some music and films now and again !

any help appreciated

thanks

Wait for the other guys with a bit more knowledge than me to give their recomendations.

But im sure they will say the Core 2 duo....Thats what theyve been recomending most people for new builds anyway.:)

that cpu is only 1.86ghz compared to the pentium d 2.80ghz so how is it faster ?

More ghz doesn't mean much now. A C2D with a lower clock speed will beat my P4 with a clock speed of 3.0ghz anyday. The increase of performance is due to better architecture and other things that I don't know about...but believe people when they say that a C2D is better than a Pentium D with a higher clock speed.

The Core 2 Duo is the best pick out of those. For a long time, Intel tried to make everyone believe that Ghz was all that mattered with the Pentium 4 era. However, now Ghz doesn't matter nearly as much. While more Ghz means that certain CPUs are faster in given lines of processors (for instance, a 2.93Ghz Core 2 Duo will always be faster than a 1.83Ghz Core 2 Duo) you can't compare two different lines of CPUs just by comparing Ghz (for instance, a 3.0Ghz Pentium 4 is not faster than a Core 2 Duo 1.83Ghz).

uh... a 4.2GHz P4 cant beat a 2.4GHz E6600
