Building a desktop, my first choice CPU was AMD Athlon II X4 640 @ $100.00, Newegg has the Athlon II X3 445 on sale for $77.00. should I go for the sale or go for the 640? I do not plan to overclock.

The Athlon II 640 Quad-Core has about as much processing power as my Phenom II 940 Quad-Core Processor. I really like my processor. You won't regret buying the Athlon II 640 Processor in my opinion.

Well you probably wouldn't notice much difference between the two. Put your money into more RAM or a better case. If you already have them, then the X4
I agree. Since there's a $30 difference if you consider the $7 off. If you don't need 4 cores(and it sounds like you don't), then there would be no difference.

The Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 is still a pretty powerful processor presently despite it being released in January 2007. I think it is presently about 10 percent slower than the Athlon II 640 Quad-Core.

Edit: I was just looking at rough estimates. The Phenom II 970 Quad-Core is about 20 percent more powerful than the Athlon II 640 processor.
