I recently was suggested that I should defragment my computer. I was also told that the Windows Disk Defragmenter is not very good. Can someone reccomend one for me (preferably freeware)

buzzsaw is a good on-the-fly defragmenter that keeps your disc from becoming fragmented in the first place

and there's (at least used to be) a free version of diskeeper, which is the best defragmenting program i've ever used

Diskeeper is still around and works well. The free version is quite old, so newer programs might do better, but heck, I still use it ;)

Yes, defragging a hard drive is like organizing your desk; everything is where it should be, it is easier to find stuff and usually it leaves more room to put more stuff on......

I don't defragment enough... But yes, I agree... it's a good idea to. Though, I'm also pretty careful about what I load on my computers and try not to load than unload stuff(to keep from fragmenting it :P)

I usualy defragment my hard drive every couple of weeks...keeps my system running nice.

I just use the windows defragmenter.:)

windows defrag is fine......

the reason other programs do a better job is because they do the entire process a few times over.

That, and diskeeper is really fast. It can do a 2 or 3 pass defrag in the time it takes windows to do half......

In fact, the windows defrag often times just starts over anytime something interrupts it, so windows may not even finish one in the same time :)
