Which disks for burning

dual layer means it it capable of burning to a double sided disc, it does not seem to be dual layer it is not listed under the types of disc section, but it is fine for burning your files

The drive is definitely dual layer, but I wouldn't worry about that. I avoid using dual layer discs when possible because they are expensive and take forever to burn. As for backing up your files, optical media isn't the best solution for that. Offsite backup (i.e. using an online service to back up) is the safest and most reliable method but is also the more costly method. Services like DropBox offer 2GB for free but anything more than that and you'll be paying a monthly subscription. Depending on how much data needs to be backed up, I'd go with a flash drive or external hard drive. Much easier and faster than a stack of CDs and with today's prices not too costly either.

On the link you provided, it says it burns Dual Layer disks (DL) disks at 12x.

Now the question is how much data do you have to back up?

A regular DVD-R will hold 4.8GB a DVD Dual Layer (DL) will hold 8.5GB, the problem is most of the times the DL disk are much more than twice the cost of normal.

I only use DL disk for backing up movies without compressing them, becuase of the cost involved.

My recommendation would be to use regular DVD+-R

I do have a Buffalo Tech. Network Harddrive......Its nice cause you can hook it up anywhere via USB or CAT5...

I use it to back up, but was thinking that maybe it could fail too.....

Therefore DVD backup is failsafe....

Or maybe I'm being too cautious....

Ya won't loose both drives at the same time. I have 4 burners on mine. Yours is a DL. One thought though. You are going to burn some small files also. Might want to burn the final on slower speed also. Mostly doc files are small and create a problem. Maybe.
+R is best but some people cant read them. Older cd or dvd players mostly only read -R.
Just saying a time and place for both. -R is about obsolete. might need a few for maybe family though.
