Which Ethernet port?

This might be a dumb question but I never bothered to find out until today and I couldn't find much online.

My motherboard has dual ethernet ports. In Windows only the top one will work to get online. In Linux Ubuntu however, only the bottom one will work.

Why is this?

if you go to network and internet connections in windows you should see local area connection and local area connection 2. disable the first one and enable the second one and plug your cord in the bottom

I just disable one in the bios and use the other. However, there's nothing wrong with running both. Windows should pick up the network/internet on whichever you use.

What is the point of the dual connections? For bridges and to use as a kinda of cross over cable from comp to laptop without needing an external router or soemthing?

I think you can run a ring network off them for lan games and such.

You can have on connected with a crossover to another device then the other one to a router.
