Which file shredder?

Hi all, i'm wanting to sell my p.c, but am concerned about identity theft ect, just what Google Desktop can recover is scary. I'm asking advice on which " File Shredder " to either buy or better download for free, if Google Desktop, as powerfull as it is, is available for a free down load, then surely, there must be a decent File Shredder for free.
I don't want to format the hdd, just a way so that when someone buys my pc, they wont be able to see what info is on there, bank account, e-mails web history, even what i've been listening to...

Alll suggestions welcome

Thanks.

Just search google for Format free space or somthing, and you will find enough programs.

Kent.

Do you use Spybot Search and Destroy for Spyware removal? If so, Under tools, is a secure shredder.

If not, try this one:

BTW, the absolute most secure way- Drives are so cheap, I would by a new drive, install windows, Destroy the old drive.

Thanks for your reply.
Yeah, i use Spybot, already tried that, the other one from the link you sent, needs me to have a floppy drive. Don't have one. Just DVD/Rom and DVD/RW.

Might have to buy new hdd, thing is, windows came pre-installed on this pc.

:(

Are you saying after you ran the shredder in SSD, Google desktop still surfaced your files? If so, how many passes did you set it for? I would suggest several, like 20 passes. I've never used this shredder, but I like to think it's somewhat effective.

Don't forget to run disk clean up first (XP system Tools). This will clean your temp files up as well as others. Select and delete them all and then under more options select clean up for these options. These files would not show up are free space to a shredder until you delete them so Google Desktop would surface them. Also, In Internet explorer, Delete ALL files under browsing history. And one more obvious one, empty the Recycle bin. Then run the Shredder.

A couple other suggestions:

Eraser
http://sourceforge.net/projects/eraser/

CCleaner

Cheers Crypto

Tried all above, Google Desktop, still finds some.

Will post another thread, inviting all to beat Google Desktop.

Many thanks.

Google Desktop is a bit odd though, even when I use permanent delete files still show up, you'll have to re-index because somethimes it misses files being deleted.

Cheers for replying.
Not only have i reindexed. I uninstalled Goolge Desktop, went into regedit, removed all Google entries. Rebooted, then ran CCleaner and Spybot Secure Shredder, (50 passes), re-installed Goggle Desktop, guess what... Still finds stuff from today, yesterday last year....
