which is better brand?

Well, if you buy Sony then you're pretty much just paying to have their name on a product. I'd say try looking for reviews on them and seeing which is better.

With the exception of one thing, Digital Audio (SDDS). The quality of those units were not very high, and the overall performance sub-par.
But as far as dvd rom goes, I'd still take the Sony over the LG.

to be quite honest, I don't think you're going to run into any problems no matter what company you choose (within reason of course). What I usually do when I'm in the market for one is wait to see what's on sale on newegg and usually go for that one

so i did a bit research and i found out that the sony dvdrom has significant problems with reading even slightly scratched disks and has slightly higher cpu utilization so i'll go LG

DO NOT BUY THE SONY. There are a lot of junk DVD burners out there, depends on the chip set. If you are just guessing by the name brand it will not work. Here are the ones to consider:: LG, BENQ ( Except for the DQ60, rebranded teac), LaCie , Plextor, NEC .
I bought 2 DVD burners, that I descovered through other forums were junk,
they were a BTC, and BENQ DQ60, THE BENQ went back where it came from for a full refund + they gave me a refund on shipping, a lot were returned to them.
The BTC I gave away
here is what I got has not made a coaster yet,, DL or +r, -r burning

Buy nothing less than a Pioneer as far as DVDR drives are concerned. All the cool kids use them :D Plus all the media manufacturers use them to test their media so compatibility is second to none.

I think all the models I listed use the pioneer chipset
I use to use RIDATA media till I was warned away from using them after quality dropped after the move of the factory to China.
I now use Verbatim, I bought a cake tin of 50 16x 4.7gig ( dvd5) for $17
I still have some RiData DL media left, Got them on sale , $2 - $5 each media is too much for me, right now, reminds me of when I got my first 2x cd burner. Back then blank CDs were right around $2.00 each.
