ya'll are looking at this the wrong way. Dell consumer home user products which are the inspiron/dimension lines are crap. they put more thought and engineering into the business products. I love my D410. ultralight and ultra portable.

However, I prefer the IBM Thinkpad when it comes to traveling, style and rock solid construction. I love my T60.

ya, HP has the Compaq line which isnt worth crap, but its not called HP, so it keeps the main brand name looking good. Dell should do that.

funny you mention that cause Compaq used to be the name of the company of a stand alone computer manufacturer before HP bought them out...does that mean HP bought a crappy company to put their HP crap under a different name??? we may never know

Given the choice, I prefer HP, however I will not deny that Dell has some kickass deals. Dell almost always seems to beat out HP in the price to performance ratio, however HP uses quality parts. In my experience, HP's generally are less likely to have a power supply or a DVD drive or whatever fail, and generally have more options towards upgrading.

pull them both apart and you may be amazed just similar the internals are...even down to using the same vendors for mobo's, hdds, optical drives, you get the picture..

my brother has a Win89 compaq, and its great. the speakers are louder than the ones on my new laptop. i think before hp bought them out, compaq was a respectable brand, then turned them crappy. its a shame really, but its a smart business move.
heres an interesting fact: HP owns VooDoo, and Dell owns Alienware (everyone knew that)

Compaq have always been trash about like Packard Bell, ha maybe not that bad.

Dell is crap even the business line.. Optiplex are doorstops

HP make a good system for the average user and for business use

IBM/LANOVO are very good systems for Business use

Now hold on... maybe I've been lucky, but I've worked with and owned several Compaqs, and not a single one has disappointed me. An 898Mhz Athlon Pavilion was the first computer that I ever worked on, and I loved that thing. I have a Compaq Presario laptop now, and I love it too, and it hasn't given me a bit of trouble. A friend of mine had a Compaq Pavilion with a 3400+, and it definitely wasn't a bad machine. I've never seen anything to suggest that the Compaq line has any lower standards than the HP line.
