I was going to upgrade my computer and get a new gfx card but was wondering if it is would be better to get like two 6800GSs or get one 7900GT?

Deffinetly the 7900GT. Besides the fact that it performs better in games/tests, it also has newer technology.

The 7600GT is a better all around card. I don't know much about SLI so it's hardfor me to say how much better it would actually be, but I'd proboably still go with a single GPU. Less heat, power, etc etc etc...

*edit*

Duh, stupid me :P I forgot about that one Duel card tab :P

In truth two 7600gts would perform better than one 7900gt, but the 7900gt will be a better choice because you could always sli that to get more performance and the 7900gt right now will play most games on max settings.

were not talking about two 7600gt's... were talking about two 6800gs's.
either way though, the 7900gt would be better in my opinion. two of those cards would be better in some games but the single card configuration also has its advantages. personally, i prefer having one card.
you get what you pay for, its that simple. they had a problem awhile back and it was that two 6600gt's performed better in doom 3 than one more expensive card... and the two 6600gt's costed less! there was no reason to get the higher performance card, and they had to fix that quick. basically, they now charge the correct amount for each card when it comes to SLI.
you may be able to get two cards to perform better than one card in SLI but you'll also end up paying more normally.

btw i'd go with the single card configuration, 7900gt. its a very good card and it'll play all the games on high :D

Yea, the 7900GT by far. Remember, SLI only boosts your performance by about 30%, so i think its safe to say the 7900GT outperforms the 6800GSs by 30%

Depending on the program or game, it can boost it up to around 80%.

I would also go with the 7900GT.

Less moving parts = Less broken parts. Two 6800GS, one brokes down = you´ll have only one 6800GS = poor performance and warranty exchange hassle begins and that other 6800GS may as well die and then you´l have two broken cards.. One 7900GT = only one gard can die. Single 7900GT is far better and is newer technology..

chips dont move, hard disks and optical discs do.
the cards wont break unless you crack them on purpose. SLI can actually slow some games down but only if it doesnt require a lot of graphics to be processed... in which case you'll maybe lower 10fps from 110 fps to 100fps lol... either way id get the single card preferably with 512mb if you can

Cards have coolers, coolers can brake down. I have much experience of cards that have broken down without reason and yes it´s common that they do so and if oyu have 2 cards then theres is 2x more possibility of card that it´s going to die :) Latest expience is my friend´s Gainward 7800GS+ and Gainward is a quality brand but that card just died :( and went for warranty exchange. You see tha GPU PCB is a complex system that can brake down very easilly and by itself cause of the manyfactyring error. And yes single 7900GT is far better as I said. Preferable 512MB as I do =)

I previously had the 7600 GS and upgraded to the 7600 GT through a deal! Definitely the better card, much better performance, i saw almost 30fps increase in some games! Greatly recommended!

ive never had a gpu cooler break down on me... maybe its because i prefer to apply an arctic cooler or a zalman myself to keep it extra cool... stock coolers aren't that great... i didn't change the one on my 7900gtx though, its got heatpipes and such and keeps it nice and cool.
