at stock speeds, the 4800+ is indeed faster.
also, the 4800+ consumes less power, concluding it's either much more power effective, or most likely, it runs a lot cooler.

( funny.. in the idle power consumption, the 2 different cores used for the X2's is quite noticeable )
so in my oppinion, get the AMD. sure,.. the Intell can be overclocked to the same performance as them AMD,. but the AMD can be overclocked too.

actually theres no way a 4800+ runs cooler... because people cool core 2 duo e6300's passively... meaning no fans. actually i think it consumes less power too. anyways, the e6300 is what i would choose... but i'd put a nice cooler on it with the money i saved and overclock it to like 3.6ghz lol

The Core 2 Duo produces 75W, where as the X2 produces 125W. So the C2D does run cooler.

The e6300 is a better choice, especially when price comparing, and if you decide to oc the c2d will oc a heck of alot better and a oc'ed e6300 beats a fx-62 (at stock though)
