which is faster

i have a q6600 with ddr2-800. i also have a athlon II x4 630 with ddr3-1066. if both chips were running at 2.8Ghz, which systme would be the quicker one. im trying to decide which setup i should use, as the amd setup is just sitting in a drawer not being used because im using the q6600 right now. thank you

the Q6600 clocks at 2.4 ghz - I can't find much info on it - looks like an older CPU ????

I think the newer Athlon II - AM3 socket will be a faster CPU @ 2.8 Ghz clock speed - with a platform you could upgrade at a later point to a reasonably priced chip that gives you a bump in performance.

Haven't come across any benchmarks side by side yet though.

q6600 is a really good processor for overclocking

At the same clocks, the Q6600 is slightly faster on average. I doubt you'd notice any difference in real-world apps, though. You'd really have to benchmark the programs you're using on both computers to see which one would be faster for you...

However, if you're too lazy to do any benchmarking, I'd say stick with the Q6600 for now.

well im going to do some benchs. i need to put the pc together and ill do it then. kind of confused on how to instal xp, vista, and 7 on the same hard drive. any ideas. anyways, i was thinking that since the amd setup will be running ddr3 over the ddr2 with the intel, that it may have an advantage, 133mhz faster on the ram. but i dont know, ill find out tommorow i suppose. the amd will be using a 4890, and the q6600 is on a gtx 260, both with 6 gigs of ram. 2 good gaming rigs i think.

It was the most popular quad core processor of it's time. :D

And I'd go Q6600, you can push that thing beyond 3.2ghz easily with half decent cooling.

My friend has an overclocked Q6600 and that thing is a beast. But like Jamin43 said, I'd probably go w/ the Athlon II x4 cause of the AM3 and it having a larger margin of upgrading potential later than the Q6600.

Plus according to PassMark, the Athlon IIx4 is rated higher than the Q6600.

I also say go with the Advanced Micro Devices motherboard and the DDR3 RAM. You can upgrade to a faster processor with the AMD motherboard over the Socket LGA775 motherboard. The Core 2 Quad Q6600 is a great processor.

If you are not planning on using it I would attempt to sell it and get around $100 out of it.

The Q6600 may be slightly faster clock for clock, but that's really all it has going for it. LGA 775 is phased out platform with little support left. The Athlon II is newer 45nm architecture, and supports DDR3. It will be much easier to upgrade down the road with the AMD. Upgrade to a Phenom II X4, faster DDR3, newer and better motherboards, etc. Go with the Athlon.

I would honestly go with the Athlon II setup. The Q6600 may be very very slightly better, but right now they are still fetching decent prices for selling them but probably not for long. So I would get rid of the q6600 and the ddr2, and get yourself a nice 790x or fx AM3 motherboard so you upgrade to a Phenom II in the future.
