Which is faster?

i have an external enclosure and i will soon have a lan with 2-4 computers networked. so, which is faster, putting an ide hard drive in a cheapo usb enclosure(shared on the network) or putting it in either a lower p4 with 512mb of ddr ram or a p3 with 512 of pc133. i would assume in the computer?

Put it in the cheapo computers. I can't believe you actually considered that a usb enclosure would be faster then putting it in a p3. The usb enclosure's transfer speed is rediculously slow compared to just putting it in a computer via ide.

sorry if i offended you, sheesh. all it takes is an answer...

i didn't know if the network lag would be worse than the usbness.

If you have the USB Drive connected via USB to the computer you will be using it, then it would be the best choice. Also, unless you have gigabit LAN you will have a max transfer rate of 100Mb/s (USB 2.0 is much higher then that).

i don't think a old 120 gig hard drive will get 100Mb/s. so the difference is negligible? or would it still be better for the usb?

Just for an example, the fastest Network Attached Storage device on Tom's Hardware is 14MB/s, with the average being around half that.

I don't know where a good comparison between USB enclosures is, but one that was rated at 19MB/s(35MB/s with firewire) If I had to choose, I'd go with the USB. If anything, you have the freedom to move it around.

I would go with usb. I have a usb hard drive and I can move stuff to it faster than i can move stuff to my p3 computer's hard drive.
