Which is the culprit? Not the router

In a thread with a similar title two days ago, I explained the problem: after being disconnected for several hours, Internet connection cannot be resumed unless computer is re-started.

It happened again yesterday. Same message: "The host 'pop-server.nyc.rr.com' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly." I then pinged the router -- successfully. Furthermore I was able to play music stored on my computer out of my Squeezebox 1 which is connected to my computer thru the router. So evidently the router is not the culprit.

I also pinged the cable modem (thru the router) -- likewise successfully. Furthermore a second computer connected to the cable modem thru the router was able to connect to the Internet. But not mine, even though the successful pinging of the cable modem showed that a clear path of communication existed. And again I had to re-start the computer in order to connect to the Internet.

Can anyone interpret this evidence and suggest a way of solving the problem? It would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

I'm new to the computer world but I would check a network card or internet card if there is one

(sorry for my lack of knowledge)

This does seem very strange. Do you have a 1 box solution in your router (modem/router combo) or a two box solution where you have a router attatched to a seperate modem?

I am assuming that its a two box solution. Have you tried updating the firmware on your modem? It seems that its going offline when left idle for some time. If you have you idle time set to 0 and its still happening, then its probably going to be a firmware/driver issue.

What products are you using?
