its going to be used in college and taken to class and then used for gaming in the dorm.

I say get the one with the better GPU and then just upgrade it's HDD and RAM.

Newer is always a good thing. Lighter is better for taking to class. A laptop GPU is one of the hardest and most costly upgrades. You can always upgrade the ram and hd. The battery life will proberbly be better on the smaller one too.
