Which Laptop CPU? and other questions...

I started a thread last week asking for laptop recommendations and got some help there, but now I have some further questions.

Based on the "ASUS...Any Good?" thread, well, ASUS seems to be a good laptop brand and I am looking currently looking at those; however, the world of laptop processors seems to be even more convoluted than desktop processors and I have some questions regarding which is better and such.

So, to make it as simple as possible, what is a good laptop processor; I have seen AMD Mobile Turion 64, Intel pentium M (Celeron and Sonoma), Intel pentium M, Intel Celeron, and Intel Core Duo. I understand that some of those Intels are the same, but help me distinguish which is better please.

As I brought up before, I don't usually run individual large programs, but often to use multiple (4 - 8) programs simultaeously, plus your standard background apps (antivirus, email, etc.). I am thinking that at least a gig of RAM will help that. Also, a 5,400 or 7,200 rpm HDD should aid in overall speed (I think at least), with maybe 60 to 80 GB size-wise (will this effect heat/noise?).

For processor, I am thinking that the Intel Core Duo will probably fit my needs very well, and the Intel has the adde bonus of running DDR2 currently.

Other important aspects are heat and noise; obviously I want to keep both to a minimum and processor power and HDD rpm both add to that correct?

Also, Iwould like a high def display (15 - 15.4"), but I don't need a separate graphics card.

My total budget is approximately $1500.00.

Anyway, I am just trying to pin down what I need and if it can be had for that budget; I don't need specific recommendations at this point.

For those screen sizes and your budget- If you want duo core, Asus has the A6Jc at the moment and the Z96J should be here later this month (but Asus release dates are always off). No pricing on the Z96J yet, but it'll be here with an x1600 graphics card in it.

The Intel Duo Core has what you want it looks like. Great multi-tasker, low heat, available in a variety of laptops and brands, etc. The Turion runs hotter I believe, but they are both cool enough to be an option. The Turions however tend to be less readily available through alot of brand name laptops.

A 7,200RPM drive takes away more battery life, but it gives you better performance. As far as heat I would imagine it's hotter, but not much to worry about. It should also be noisier logically, but again it depends on what brand you buy. Some are dead quiet, others are chain-saws. Your main deciding point will probably be, can you spare the battery life for faster access/write time?

So, it seems that the Intel Duo is the way to go.

As far as HD and battery life, the computer is almost never run on batteries so that shouldn't be an issue. I do travel with it fairly often, whihc is why I need the laptop instead of a desktop.

It looks like I can get a Levono with pretty much everything I want for the a good price; quick questions, are Levono notebooks considered good quality/price?

Thanks
