Which laptop do you suggest for under $500 USD?

I'm looking to get a new laptop around $500. Needs to have
built-in webcam, Windows 7, min. 4GB ram, min. 320GB HDD.

I've been looking at Best Buy and Newegg.com. Any other
places I should look?

Which brands should I stay away from?

Which brands should I lean toward?

What did you hear about Gateway?

I was looking at this Gateway laptop at BestBuy for $480:

HDD - 320GB
RAM - 4GB 667mhz
CPU - 2 x 2.1Ghz AMD
GPU - ATI Radeon HD 3200
Webcam - Yes
DVD - Yes
WiFi - B, G and N
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

I heard DELL was really terrible last year. Even I had put in an order for a desktop, and after 35 days, they hadn't even shipped it out. Would anyone recommend getting a laptop from DELL?

The gateway FX is a good laptop. It has good build quality and the screen has nice picture. Its nothing like the rest of their laptops though so I'd stay away. Asus laptops feel very solid and are built well.

srsly why do all these people say a certain brand sucks over others.
they all use the same parts, although they might be put together differently.

i got my acer laptop for $400 on special & free shipping from newegg. it has everything you asked for except only 3gb ram, which is really no big deal, you can upgrade for cheap yourself.

i use this laptop for school and work and it's never given me problems. i think if you know how to use a computer and take care of your stuff, there really is no computer that will under-perform just because it's got a different label on the cover.

It's not really the "brand", per se, it's their reputation and how people view them from experience.

lean towards asus, hp, sony, toshiba, lenovo, dell. STAY AWAY FROM: acer, compaq, gateway

Stay away from Sony you mean. You pay for the logo nothing else. Acer Laptops are fine and so are Compaq. You say stay away from Compaq but they are owned by HP.

Yeah, but Compaq's lower-end. Sorta like ASRock, they're still technically part of ASUSTek, but they dedicate it to their lower-end parts.

sony's may cost more but they are still good computers. acer's and compaq's are some of the crappiest computers. HP may own compaq, but they are different. they were different companies and hp bought compaq. thats like saying ford and mazda cars are exactly the same because they are both owned by ford.
