Which laptop - Macbook or Dell?

1. Bold statement
http://www.webmasterworld.com/macintosh_webmaster/3576498.htm

2. True, but it's not hard to make a windows machine just as capable for free

4. Uggh, they all look the same. I like having a variety, to stand out in a crowd.

5. So does pretty much every laptop...

6. Again, debatable.

7. And Apple parts are easy to come by? I'd like to see you get say a macbook keyboard off the shelf from your local computer or mac store.

8. Deerp

I also speak from personal experience...my poor, poor final cut projects...would have been great it the mac didn't keep crashing. Not to say that it can't be maintained, like any computer.

1) Arguably a bold statement. But it shouldn't be debated because Windows is still weaker. You'd be picking a losing side of an argument.

2) Why do more work than you have to? Even then if you have to reinstall, it's back to the drawing board(unless slipstreamed/imaged).

4) Macs look a lot cleaner. You have an Apple logo but at least it's not hanging off like a chromed Dell logo.

5) Yeah you can get a webcam in any laptop nowadays. But the software for the webcam is probably some crap from the OEM. And to save yourself future frustration you would have to go buy some other software that functions better. But, not with a Mac! iMovie comes out of the box and so does iChat, both are made by Apple.

6) Yeah they are easier to use, the interface is so much better. But yet it doesn't consume as much RAM as Vista. With a Mac, I don't have to pick install directories, they just go right in my Applications folder. And NO REGISTRY!

7) Both of them have the same process of obtaining parts.

8) Are you seriously gonna refer an article from when Leopard was first released? If I only knew how many updates there have been since then...

As for your Final Cut projects, I am guessing you were on a PowerPC machine. A LOT has changed since the PPC days.

hahaha, that is the ultimate mac fanboy reply. all i did was LOL at the idiocracy

It's easy to talk trash when you haven't even tried to use something. Not contributing to the thread makes it that much easier I guess, also.

for the following reasons i wouldn't get a mac((book) or otherwise):

1. You can get the same system for 75% of the price. You are paying alot more because of a little picture of a half eaten apple on it
2. It is very hard to get replacement parts for a good price. Generally you have to go direct to apple so again, it costs 150% of the price of the same, equally good part.
3. Windows is more common than Mac so, this is starting to end but is still true, there is a fair bit of software that works on windows but not osx. There are programs that are only for mac and not windows, but generally there are equally or better stuff available for windows.

Also, for that apple fanboy up there a few posts back, don't listen, he is talking out of his arse and just tryna plug apple, he has been brainwashed by the apple advertising :P

1) Oh yeah, but how does that affect functionality?

2) Wrong. Any idiot can use eBay.

3) Could be more popular but apparently you've never heard of Wine. And if you have a Mac, why would you want Windows' crap programs on it anyway?

As for the PC fanboy whose post I am replying to, don't listen, he is talking out his arse and trying to push against something he knows nothing about. Learn some stuff before you come into a thread quoting the obvious.

It's both easier and cheaper to get parts for the Dell.

I used to be one of the Dell haters but now after using them at work I think they make great products.

As for the virus thing, if there were as many users of mac than there were as vista we would see much more mac viruses. The lack of viruses doesn't mean that mac is a more secure o/s than windows.

Please list me a bunch of Applications that will not run on a Mac, do not have a Mac version or there is not a Mac alternative, but excluding video games. Plus most of the major video games do eventually get ported over to the Mac, but not all of them; and thus some major PC titles don't get ported over. Then again if you have a console and prefer PS3 or xbox 360 then this is a non issue.

It's not because of the user base. It's because of one word: Unix.

Me being me would choose the mac book but in that you are using it for general student use you should go with the Dell and the Dell has better specs form what you posted so I would go with the Dell

The MacBook is a great computer (I have one!) but if I where you I'd get the Dell and install OSx86 on it, you'll get more computer for your money that way.

Although, before you do go that route, I'd make sure that it's competable first.

lets lower the anger level. there is no answer this is apples and oranges.

Who here is angry? No one, people are just giving out wrong information. We are only trying to correct that misinformation.

In the end you are just given a choice, and it comes down to a preference. There really is no better or no worse, but there is just what you prefer.

That's a dodgy route to take.

There is one way to find out, just pop a disc in it. Unfortunately, my 1520 will not run any of them.

Viruses have been made for mac in the past so that proves that they can exist and if there were more users then the programmers would make more viruses for them.

Did you read through anything that we have posted on this thread? We aren't denying that they don't exist. We are saying there are ZERO (and zero proof of concept) self propagating viruses for OS X, Linux and Unix in the wild. Those only exist for Windows.

Please read the thread.

Linux may be a virus free environment (like mac) but under personal preference I keep finding my way back to Windows.

Viruses shouldn't be a majour selling point because if your careful online and use an antivirus you'll be fine.

Now on to the topic in hand, a laptop for recording. This points to a mac - however it really depends on what software you're planning on using, becasue if you're not planning on buying any then mac and windows are about the same.

Most recording applications that'll work on a mac also have windows versions so what are you planning on using to record and what is the recording source?

I would take the mac if you are a student, just because it works better in that field. It is very effecient and you get more for your buck. It is very easy to use, very simple mantinence and the warranty covers just about everything. e.g. I recently just got my dvd drive replaced for free when it broke. I just brought it to an apple store and they did it in a few days. In my opinion if you are an amateur with computers take the mac. If your a gamer, take the dell. If your a student, mac. If you need to run some windows programs that aren't huge, you can download parallels. it allows you to run windows and mac without rebooting. also, if your a computer expert, use linux. some dells come with it. Macs can be hacked, it just takes some looking. Mac is generally virus free, just don't do anything stupid.

1. Thanks Tips. It was a bold statement because it simply isn't true.

2. Well it helps to not like the software that comes with the mac..I can't stand iphoto. Also the money savings is a pretty sweet bonus.

4. Cleaner is code word for boring. I'd take the looks of my inspiron 6400 over the macbook any day. But I'd take the looks of some of Asus' laptops over both.
How is the Dell logo any worse than the apple?

5. You sound like the guys in the infomercials, lol. Oh, and windows movie maker and live messenger are definitely not a free download away...

6. Excuse me? How can you even argue this?

8. Gee..memories of the anti-vista propaganda

And yes, twas on a power pc. I'm still not impressed by the intel macs...Not being able to put pictures on thumbdrives..Adobe programs thinking they're constantly installed...you can't escape it man..it's a computer. Stop thinking it's a godputer.

Anyway, as it's already been pointed out it is down to personal preference. Period. To the OP, take some time to use both (be it store demo or whatever). Figure it out, only you know what you'll be happy with.

It's not that dodgy these days, you can use a retail DVD and have a totally unmodified OS X system on your Dell.

This original thread is mac vs dell. Apple has a better customer service from what I have heard even though I have not had any problems with dell customer service. But Dell offers more to there consumers in the laptop area. Apple has macbook and macbook pro, and there cheapest is 1200$. With dell you have net books for people who are mobile, cheap single core cpu laptops that are for people who want to surf the web and check email, there are there mid priced laptops that are for people who want all the above plus on the note of video or photo editing can be done on these with adobe which is good software. Then you have there high end which are good for all the above plus gaming and those are about the same price if not much more than a macbook. Plus being a pc you can get blue ray. Plus because Dell has listen to what the consumer want and don't just offer one OS. They have windows, Ubuntu (on 4 models) and you can get freedos. Plus OSX is only great for the consumer that wants the video or photo editing software. If not widows is great for compatibility and Linux is better for performance. I would bet a Dell studio xps with linux running the dual core and 4 GB of memory would be faster then mac for the price.
