the HP has better graphics and larger HDD space. Then again its a HP, so stay away from it. You will be better with the Dell.

STAY AWAY FROM HP, my old laptop that was HP died in a year and 1 day, out of warranty and out of luck along with a locked bios in any direction you go. Dells are amazing.

Last year Engadget.com did a poll on how what laptop within a 3 year span had deffects and be sent back to the manufacture the least. Hp took dead last and it showed a huge difference with how long there laptops lasted depending on what warrenty was purchased from the manufacture when purchased.

Asus agreed, Alienware not so much. Alienware are powerful but very expensive for what you get and they may not be garbage but they are still not the most reliable.

but when you see he consider that HP at $1650. he may want to get a $1700 alienware...

The HP has shared video memory and the Dell has dedicate video memory.
Is shared video memory taken from the main memory? If that is the case, it won't be better than the dedicated video memory. does it?
When you said better graphic, do you mean better display or better video card(chip)?
Thank you.
To the OP. I would get one of the Asus instead.
Either This one

i meant the Card. The 6850 is a dedicated Graphics Processor. Its got 1GB dedicated and the ability at high resolution, to suck some system memory if needed.

It doesn't say so on the specifications at bestbuy site, it say up to 1gb memory(shared). Maybe it is a mistake?.

definitely a mistake.
And dont trust bestbuy. They told me its impossible to upgrade laptop RAM, and that Linux only worked on MACs. They are idiots man.

didn't even look at price, Hp is automatically crap in my eye's no matter the price. Personally a $1700 laptop is retarded anyway, could get a desktop that would well out perform that for half that price.

Just financially when you look at it, for long term performance with gaming, gaming laptop especially at that price is not a smart investment.

Yes, but college student may has limited space for desktop and it is not easy to move around, so a good laptop will fit the need.

and can take it to classes that allow it and carry around campus to friends and all, so it's better get the laptop unless you want him to carry a desktop with a monitor, keyboard and mouse to his classes and either find an outlet or bring a car batter or something and a converter too.
