and can take it to classes that allow it and carry around campus to friends and all, so it's better get the laptop unless you want him to carry a desktop with a monitor, keyboard and mouse to his classes and either find an outlet or bring a car batter or something and a converter too.
You would never build up enough power with a auto battery to power a desktop. most are 110 volt, that would be 10 daisy chained batteries to make near that (120 volts), even then, its direct current. It would fry the circuits as it would have too much current. you just couldnt line up the AC 110 Volts and 20 amps current with DC batteries. My truck batteries would be a good example. 24 volts, 2000 CCA @0*c. 1/5 the voltage you need and already 100x the current. 10 for 120 volts would be 10000 amps, 500x the computers normal max pull. (Smell the smoke yet?)
Its an interesting concept though. Might just have to try this soon.

Yes, but college student may has limited space for desktop and it is not easy to move around, so a good laptop will fit the need.
thank you.

didn't even look at price, Hp is automatically crap in my eye's no matter the price. Personally a $1700 laptop is retarded anyway, could get a desktop that would well out perform that for half that price.

Just financially when you look at it, for long term performance with gaming, gaming laptop especially at that price is not a smart investment.
Yea, but you cant pick up your desktop and carry it to your truck or such and go gaming at 60mph? not everyone has the ability to set at home and game on a desktop along with Schooling, work, and other various things. But there is a lot of transit time that you can game in with a fairly equipped laptop.

i was just making a point, not meant to be practical or usable, love the way the guy who made the thread isn't even in this chat

we might have scared him away.
But it does sound like it would be neat to try that battery setup. I might give it a try on one of the numerous Pentium 3/4 desktops around on craigslist for like $50 here. You can run an inverter from the cigar lighter to run the 12 volts/1000 amps to 110/20. Just need to get one and tear it apart, find what makes it tick and rig one between the 120/10000 to drop it to 110/20.
Call it a 2012 readiness drill man, it will be fun either way.

then build a mout and monitor in you trunk and get good rechargeable batteries and make it like the set ups on that old show pimp my ride i think, that would be sick if you got it working.

Don't tell me about limited room, Navy Sailor here, most of you have no idea about limited room. We take desktops on freakin deployment and when I have showed family what personal space we have the look is always funny to look at.

Build desktop and store where you sleep and get a $6-700 laptop.

find a site that'll let you build something like the fragbox gaming pc, look it up, super computer size of a shoe box and starts at like 1500 or so, nice idea for you but cost will likely not get you much power due to smaller means more
