Which laptop should I get?

Hi all
my budget is $1500
Don't really mind which brand to get.
Need to use it for internet, word documenting, watching movies and listen to mp3s.

Would prefer the new glossy coating on screens that I have seen in recent laptops.

Don't mind xp or vista.

Thanks in advance.

Wayne

there are a few suggestions, all of those include a dedicated video adapter because you shouldn't pay more that $1000 for a notebook that has intigrated graphics (in my opinion). In addition they all have 100 gig hard drives. The hp is in need of a memory upgrade though for some reason it only comes with 512meg. For your purposes the ASUS would be the best, but the sony vaio would be good as well. There are many many more to choose from than just those three on newegg.com, and it's easy to customize your search to exactly what you want. Good luck and happy shopping.

Virtually none of the "Name" brands manufacture their own laptops, with the about the only exception being Asus.

Instead they buy their laptops from what is called an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM). These ODMs sell their computers to several different OEMs (like DELL, Toshiba, Lenovo (formerly IBM), HP, Compaq, Sager, PowerPro, Sony and many others) who then install the Hard Drive (usually a Seagate, Fujitsu, Hitachi or Toshiba), an Intel or AMD Processor, and System Memory. They then put their label on it and market it.

For example:

An ODM named Clevo makes the Sager NP9890 and the Alienware Area-51 m7700, the Voodoo Envy u:703, the Hypersonic Aviator EX7, the Falcon Northwest FragBook DR 6800, and they are all the same computer (although Sager usually has the more advanced and exotic technology).

Of course the Sager models have a much sweeter price tag!

An ODM named Compal makes some of the DELL, Hewlett Packard and Compaq line of laptops, among others, as well as the PowerPro L 8:15 (Built on Compal HEL80).

ASUS, famous worldwide for their top quality motherboards and other components makes their own laptops and call them their "Ensemble" line. They also sell their "Built-on-ASUS" line to many different OEMs including PowerNotebooks.com. These models are the PowerNotebooks.com PowerPro A 2:24 (Built on ASUS 96J), the Crown R 6:22 (Built on ASUS Z92Km), the PowerPro P 2:14 (Built on ASUS Z62F), and the Crown C 3:15 (Built on ASUS Z33Ae).

The Dell Latitude and the Sony Vaio are made by Quanta, who also makes many of the IBM laptops, and the now-discontinued PowerPro C 3:16, and the new PowerPro G 3:14 (Built on Quanta SW1). Quanta is well known as one of the best and highest quality laptop ODM in the world.

Other ODM names are Mitac, FIC, AOpen, and Uniwill, among others. Not exactly what you would call "Name" brands, and yet it is their laptops that end up with the "Name" brands on them.

Well, you get the idea.

Some call this the "Dirty little secret of the Laptop Industry".

that's the best rig for your budget

Try a mac

I don't want to ram all this great stuff about mac down your throat. Just, if you never have, try one. You will see, in my opinion, an incredible difference in quality across the board. I bought a Sony Vaio in Nov, my umpteenth windows comp. Had probs all my life but this one was by far the worst ever. I became so frustrated I went a bought a mac and it just works, all the time, every time. QUICK! I am now in big time debt but I have peace of mind.

i hope you never want to upgrade that mac (their idea of upgrade, throw it away and buy a new one) at least it's easy :-p

I agree with our mac friend up there, I love my macbook with a passion. C2D 2.0 ... 2 gigs of ram and battery life to make me smile. It's my first mac, and I bought it on a whim while at the mac store looking at ipods ... I jsut fell in love with it. I'm for sure a mac fanboy now ... of course I enjoy my Vista PC as well.

i like the over all design of the mac notebooks, but what about right clicking, i used one once and i felt totally naked without my precious right click.

lol... :D
use the normal windows mouse like what my school did...
i know the right click wont do anything but at least the right click button is still there and you can click on it... just that it wont do anything... :D:D
that will solve your nakedness problem... though now its just like putting a semi-transparent clothes over yourself... not much difference...

lol lol... :D

to right click you either control - click or you can set it up that you tap with both fingers on the trackpad

wrong!!! mac's do have a right button, though not on their notebooks. the mighty mouse has a function to turn the right side of the mouse into the right button, and the left side of the mouse is just like a left button! the powerball in the middle of the mouse is awesome as well, and i am a microsoft fanboy (of sorts)

you can also plug in any regular USB mouse and use its right click function. I do that for gaming on my laptop
