Hi there,

I am new to the forum. I know quite a bit about computers and laptops, but sometimes not enough. For school next year, we have a list of requirements for laptop hardware we require. I will post the list, and what laptop would everyone suggest!?

The list is:
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

-Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7500 (2.2GHz), T7700 (2.4 GHz) – or equivalent (no Celeron’s) with chipset that must support Intel virtualization technology (i5 or i7 processor is preferred
-4 GB of ram (8G of ram preferred)
-200 GB hard drive
-CDRW/DVDRW combo drive
-10/100 Auto Sensing network card
-10/100 A/G/N standard card (one of these standards will suffice)
-Discrete video chipset 256 MB or Shared 512 MB
-Two USB ports

I had a Toshiba Sateillite L500D that the screen recently burned out, either the LCD Screen, or the LCD Inverter. I had it for quite a while so I figured it might be time for an update before school anyways.

Thanks in advance!

Once you let us know your budget you'll get many suggestions from all members.

The specs that they want are pretty good and no matter what , what ever pc you get to use for this school project or what ever it is will last you and is going to be a good laptop.

I believe my last laptop was about $1500, so I'm willing to spend around there, or more if necessary. Maximum probably about $2000.

Well, needless to say, there's tons of laptops in that price range that are better than the requirements given. Not knowing what exactly you need to be able to do with it is what will matter most. Because your old laptop is a Toshiba, and the required specs for your new machine aren't the latest and greatest, I'm going to assume you don't want anything for gaming.
Anyway, here's some options that can get you started:

From HP:

HP ENVY DV6-7214nr ~ $1250
HP ENVY DV7-7214nr ~ $1350
HP Spectre 14t-3200 ~ $1450

Obviously the Spectre is a ultrabook, but I included it so you could get a feel for the ultra-mobile section of the laptop market and see if it fit your needs as you mentioned you're going to school. I personally own the DV6 listed above and can personally vouch for it and answer any questions on it.

From Dell:

Alienware M14X ~ $1500
XPS 14 Ultrabook ~ $1550
Inspiron 17R Special Edition ~ $1100

I realize the Alienware will get hate, but there is benefits to it as well as disadvantages, but I went with showing you it anyway just in case, I personally know they are very powerful and well-built. The XPS 14 is a tad over the minimum price range, but would be ultra portable and really lightweight but has decent performance and the 17R is bigger, but would be a good workstation/desktop replacement.

From MSI:

CX61 0NF-621US ~ $1050
S20 0M-048US ~ $1250

The CX61 looks like a great all-around machine, being portable and powerful, and the S20 is a really neat and new design of a small 11" laptop basically being disconnected from the keyboard to transform into a tablet, which has very obvious advantages.

Other brands to consider would be possible Sager, and Lenovo. Once again, it's all about what you're going to use it for really, but I feel I gave a decent variety of options to get you started. If you have any questions about something I said or recommended, I'd be glad to help out. Hope I was of some assistance.

Wow, this is awesome everyone!

Thanks for all your feedback! :)

I'm going to show my dad and look into getting it pretty soon, my boyfriend has a "supplier" where he gets parts and laptops, so of course he wants me to get it through him. I of course, want to do some research of my own!

Thanks again!
