Which monitor should I use?

I currently got a video card that can support 2 monitors. I have a 720p 23'' HDTV (3000:1 Contrast with a 8ms response) and a 17'' Monitor (450:1 16ms).

The smaller screen doesn't ghost at all, so response time doesnt really matter here.

However, I have a hard time seeing which one has better black levels and details. The native res on the 23'' is 1280x720, which makes my desktop all blurry on a 23'' view. My desktop looks really crisp and clear on the 17'' with a native res of 1280x1024. However, when I play games on either screen, they look somewhat similar.

Which one would you choose for gaming, and why?

for me,hdtv is much better.
big size is always gonna be impressive.especially some awesome games performance on hdtv really kick your ass and you can switch between computer and tv channel expediently.
you mean it's not clear?ok, place it meters away from you.

Alright, so its the HDTV then. I was wondering though, what makes a display "HD" ?

My 17'' has a slightly better res than the 23'', but its not considered "HD". Is it the 3000:1 contrast ratio?

3000:1 contrast is dynamic contrast by all appearances.
its real contrast may be 650:1 or even lower.
contrast ratio means nothing in a game.8ms response time is enough too

HD is a fraudulent marketing tool. By "HD" standards, monitors have been high-def for a long, long time.

720p means a vertical resolution of 720 or 768 pixels. Your 17" LCD is 720p HD. 1080p means a vertical resolution of 1080 pixels. That's it.

your hdtv is 720p just because its "pixel distance" is longer.
u've got to keep it away in order to feel it clear.:(
