Which Motherboard?

Hey, I guess my motherboard is messed up so i need to buy a new one...but i don't know how the compatiblity issues work...can u put any motherboard in any computer? or is there a select few you can put in a computer? or only one kind for any one computer? i have this crappy computer http://hardware.gamespot.com/Compaq-Presario-S4100NX-3285-S-1-2
btw...if i install a new motherboard..will i ihave to reinstall windows or something? or would i keep everything thats on my hard drive now?
 
you have to look at the socket model of your processor and looking at the computer you posted i think is a Socket 478 or Socket A. As long as you know the CPU socket model then you can get a motherboard with the same socket model.
 
If you are buying a new motherboard the primarily you will look into the socket..! And if you already know socket of a kind then compare it with you’re motherboard if all are the same then it good!
 
Will installing a new motherboard delete my stuff off of my hard drive? or will i still have everything i still have on the hard drive?
 
Odds are you have to renstall the OS and even if you dont, you should. As such, you should backup your stuff :)
