which network setup would be faster

hey all,

I was thinking about putting together a system for pfsense firewall.

Will I see any network speed increases due to a more powerful system linked up to my network vs a link sys wrt610n router?

or will pfsense actually decrease network performance?

basically which is faster (if any difference is noticeable)

Probably not noticeable. Depends on your internet connection and usage. As you can read here your router does pretty well performance wise. I doubt your internet connection is faster then 130mbit .

You might want to check how many connections you have open for a couple of days. If you use torrents and other downloading stuff your connections will probably go over 200. So it might be worth upgrading then. But it won't really make a great impact.

I'd only change to the atom if you need the features pfsense or another software firewall can provide. If you need something easier to setup. You might want to check out kerio control. It's not free but if you can procure it otherwise it's a very nice software router/firewall. Does pretty much anything. And has a nice web interface.

No other uses for the atom? File server maybe?
