Which of my speeds is fastest?

I do not know anything about internet speeds and was just curious to know which is faster. For instance, when I go hard-wired... my connection says 10Mbps. When I attach the wire into a router (and then attach a wire from the router to my computer), my connection says 100Mbps. And when I connect through Wi-Fi with the router.... it shows 65Mbps. Is 10 or 100Mbps faster?
 
100 is the fastest there. However if you only get 10 from the source then that is the fastest speed you will get. I hardly thing you have a 65mbps connection, let alone a 100mbps.
 
Thanks... just wanted to know which was faster. So to my understanding... If my source speed is 10Mbps, then it's still going to be 10Mbps... even if it reads 65 or 100?
 
yes. Your speed will be equal to the lowest of the chain. You can have gigabit on your PC ethernet and gigabit on the switch, and gigabyte on your router, and a source of 1mbps then the whole line will run at 1mbps.

10mbps is a fine internet speed by the way.
 
Yeah my true internet speed is 2.5mb/s but it would show like 54. If it shows a certain number then it is capable of giving you that speed but it probably won't since what you get from your ISP is probably lower.
 
Ok to make things understandable.

Regular LAN - usually 100 mb, older machines may only show 10 mb.
Gigabit LAN - 1000mb
Wireless b - 11mb
Wireless g - 54mb
Wireless n - could be anywhere from 150mb on up depending on max speed of router and wireless card.

Theoretically, you can transfer data between pc's in your network that fast providing all hardware is compatible with each other.

But again, your max download speed all depends on the speed you get get from your provider.

Hopefully that explains it better. Please forgive me as I'm typing this from my phone at work.

Just checked my ISP website and what I have is their basic 10Mbps download/1Mbps upload... but checked with speedtest and just about gagged a maggot, excuse the expression. What I saw was .20 Mbps download and .05 Mbps upload....:o (Grade F-.... and slower than 99% of the US) I'm guessing that was during peak hours though.
 
try it during non peak hours. But I do not think that is your issue. Your having more issues than just provider speed with that.
 
This is during non-peak hours.... disappointing but tolerable because I've had worse speeds in the past. The type of connection I have is a wireless receiver that is hooked up on the roof... and there are tons of obstructions in the receivers line-of-sight too. I am thinking about switching to cable internet ASAP, because it takes about 18-30 hours to download 1GB or more of data at my awesome connection speeds.

If that requires any type of modem, I would do a reboot on it. Just unplug it and wait a minute and then plug it back in. If no modem, then definately upgrade to cable internet.
