Which of these processors would you choose?

I'd go for the athlon quad. Great for doing everything all at once because of the extra cores. Only downside to it is it is 95W compared to the 65W of the others (barr the x3, but they are the same chip), but it is understandable with the extra cores

You know if you want to buy one of these CPU (especially Intel) you are going to need a mobo with the right socket. If one of these AMDs then as you can see they all have got AM3 but Intel's E6500 is LGA775.

Although it is a Dual-Core I'd go for Intel but not E6500 but maybe for E7400 or E8200

I was going to say that

You can't put Intel CPU into AMD socket.

well usually I recommend intel but in this case a dual core pentium is weak. you could either get the x3 and unlock the last core or the x4 and save urself the hassle. but yeah intel doesnt work on amd socket and vice versa lol.

They do with socket 7! :p Okay, that was totally random.....

Anyways, in this scenario, the Pentium Dual-Core is a lot weaker than an Athlon II X4, if you're willing to pay that much. Between all the CPUs in the Athlon II series you listed, it all depends on if you want to take a risk. Here are your options:
1. Athlon II x4 635, fastest at stock settings, but more expensive.
2. Athlon II X3 440, less fast at stock settings, but if you unlock the fourth core successfully, it'll be faster than the Athlon II x4 635. The x3 will also always be faster in programs that don't take advantage of four cores.
3. Athlon II x2 255, a lot less fast than the x4 at stock settings, but once again, if you unlock the other two cores, this CPU will be the fastest of them all. With two cores to unlock, though, you're taking a pretty big risk. Also, if you were to only use two of its cores, the Pentium Dual-Core E6500 would actually be faster. EDIT: Just learned that the Athlon II X2 can't unlock cores, but the Phenom II x2 can. The Athlon II x3 can still unlock cores. Just don't get the Athlon II x2. The Pentium Dual is better.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net it gives you the list of all the CPUs out there, even the really old ones.

Let me do a little table for you:

-Price-|-----------CPU------------------------|---Benchmark score
$67.99-AMD Athlon II X2 255 3.1GHz------------|--1832
$74.99-AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz------------|--2553
$79.99-Intel Pentium Dual-Core E6500 2.93GHz--|--2055
$99.99-AMD Athlon II X4 635 2.9GHz------------|--3375

So it looks like:
The Dual-Core E6500 2.93GHz is 13% faster than the Athlon II X2 255 3.1GHz
The Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz is 40% faster than the Athlon II X2 255 3.1GHz
The Athlon II X4 635 2.9GHz is 85% faster than the Athlon II X2 255 3.1GHz

Lets eliminate the AMD Athlon II X2 255 3.1GHz because for $7 more you can get the AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz and that cpu has 3Cores and also 40% faster than that 255.

Now lets eliminate the Pentium Dual-Core E6500 2.93GHz because it's more expensive than the AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz and also has a lower score than the powerful AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz. The Dual-Core E6500 2.93GHz is 25% slower than the AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz and more expensive, so bye bye E6500!

So that comes down to the AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz and the AMD Athlon II X4 635 2.9GHz. The quadcore Athlon II X4 635 2.9GHz is 33% faster than the AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz.

So you can buy the powerful AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz for $75

Or for an extra $25, you can get the AMD Athlon II X4 635 2.9GHz which is 33% faster.

I would go for the AMD Athlon II X4 635 2.9GHz for the extra $25

I love that site, always check there for info! ;) You forgot to mention unlocking cores, though. That's where the X3 shines. Like I said, with a core unlocked, it'll be faster than the X4, since it's at a higher clock speed.
