I was thinking of building my own computer for the first time but my parents wont give me the money to buy the parts they think that its going to be more expensive and i cant get them out of that, they told me either buy a Pre-build one or one from walmart. I was really upset, but I've been looking at these two computers and really don't know which one is better.

I need the computer for:

  • Graphic and design (mostly) (Auto Cad, Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver..)
  • Games
  • Music
  • Movies

or any pre build computer that you guys know that are better than this two please tell me :D

Thanks guys for all the help, really appreciate it :)

Second is definitely much better for gaming - even take on Crysis at very high, 1920 x 1200. Both would be fine for video work and watching movies, but the second is probably better for everything else. Games will fly on this machine. The amount of RAM is fine, but for what you want, I would upgrade to at least 4GB. Upgrading the RAM is quite easy, and if you can't do it before purchase, it's only about an extra $100 for 4GB more after (giving you 6GB, assuming you have 4 slots and buy 2 x 2gb RAM).

You might need the extra hard drive space, but that too is quite inexpensive. Probably another $100 for the extra 500GB drive. Basically, for about $100 extra, you get a PC with a hell of a lot more gaming potential. Those 4870X2's in Quad XFire rival GTX280's in TriSLi, but are just beaten.

All said and done, upgrading yourself will probably invalidate the warranty of the product. Without upgrades, I would still suggest the second to be best, simply becuase of the massive increase in performance for games.

Hello,

I say the first one, very nice, more ram, and intel is better for what your going to be doing. But then again, the second one has a better video card! Follow below :P

Now on the parent thing :P, if you did a build within budget, go to your parents and say here is one that i did, it has better parts and better quaility and it is cheaper, and then give them one of the builds above and say, look at the price difference.

Or do a build with exactly the same parts above and see if it is cheaper, if it, once again, take both to your parents, and convince them by doing that.

If you would like, if your going to be spending $1,800 or so on a computer, myself and i'm sure some of the guys here on the forum would more then happy to provide you will some builds......

Anyone just have a think about it.

Enjoy.

Tell your parents to shut the hell up and give you the money. You have to be firm.

LOL!!! XD

Yeah, but cohen's idea isn't a bad one. If you need help coming up with some builds, I'm sure there'd be a lot of people willing to assist - even if only to prove the "technophobes" wrong once again.

You could tell them that prebuilt computers sometimes dissassemble themselves during delivery, and then repackage themselves seperately, all without the driver noticing. That might work.

8gb of RAM is totally and utterly pointless

Not entirely - might be useful in the future, or just to brag (\/ look at sig \/) and such. Just in most everyday computing. Not even gaming uses that amount of RAM.

Yeah, that would work, and then they would say, NO COMPUTER AT ALL. So then he just blew it

My idea is a good one :) ;)

yeah that's true, use my idea as plan B.

Agree

Yeah in some ways, depending on the OS, vista 64 bit would be good :)

Thanks guys for all the comments,

i am considering in getting the second one :) thanks azwebs

so then is intel would work better for me?

LOL!! man you wouldnt understand my parents when they usually say something its because they mean, and i am actually surprised that this time they are letting me pick out the computer.

yeah that's true, use my idea as plan B.
Nope did not work :(

They did not buy it at all

8gb of RAM is totally and utterly pointless

so you think its too much ?? or would the second one with 2GB be good?

Thanks guys for all the comments,

Anytime

so then is intel would work better for me?

Yes

Do the best to convince them

Nope did not work :(

Thought it wouldn't

You really need 4GB, so in between really

I was just looking right now at the Gamer Fire 580 and noticed that it has two video cards lol.. sorry but i dont know.. why does it have two video cards? is the extra one necessary?

Pointless. A single 32 bit app (there are no 64 bit only games in existance!) cannot use more than 2/3 gigs of ram by itself, and apart from the OS (256-2048mb in normal use), you generally dont have any other apps running, meaning there is generally no way you will ever use 8gb ram, unless you want to run two Crysises at once on vista or something pointless like that

Why not pick out a pre-built machine and get your parents approval. Once they say you can have the money for that machine, price out every individual part that you would need to build the exact same machine and show them the cost difference. Also show them that the parts all carry a 3-5 year warranty (which they should if you pick out good parts), while the pre-built only has a 1 year warranty.

Are you saying that it is pointless to get a 64 bit OS? If so, I wholeheartedly disagree (if I'm misunderstanding, then ignore the below). The primary reason I say this is that whether or not today's applications give an advantage to 64 bit over 32 bit (some do, some don't), the fact is that Vista 64 and Vista 32 are the same price, are equally supported by every publisher and manufacturer, and 64 bit is undebatably the future standard.

Also, if you do advanced media design/editing, or CAD, then it is not uncommon at all to exceed using 4GB of RAM

Hey, if you run Crysis windowed at 1024 x 768, very high, 4 x AA with two windows at a time, you can use nearly 5GB of RAM (but it will lag and kill almost any graphics card setup - bar GTX280 TriSLi, the most powerful config available) - so what would happen doing that three times? . . . An Intel processor would be better, but the first machine won't be all that great for games.

And ashame they did not buy the dissassembly idea. Stubborn. Just like my parents last year. We went to a local PC store, and priced the machine built by them, against components I looked at online. With someone in a technical position actually telling them it is cheaper to build than buy, they were convinced (hence my factory built Dell's and HP).

Sorry the idea did not work out, but hope you find which machine is right for you. Personally, I always go Intel over AMD, but there you go. If you go prebuilt, you have to sacrifice one for the other (unless it's a Dell or Alienware, and then you can make massive customizations that are really really really expensive!)
