which one processor to buy?

i am going to get an assembled pc. for that for that i've been given a budget of $230 to buy a processor. which one should i go with...intel or AMD. i have not searched much about it. this pc will be a general purpose pc, on which i'll be doing some programming stuff, and some photoshop and maya work...

if we have the same pricetag, which processor will perform better? intel or AMD? please suggest me a model name too, for both the processors...

one more silly question, what does mobile technology mean with respect ot a processor...as in pentium M
 
Do you need to get a processor and a motherboard with the $230? If its just a processor, give me the make and model of your motherboard, and I'll find you a processor.

With regards to your question about mobile technology, it is not silly. I was asked to build a desktop with a laptop motherboard and processor. No can do. The answer to your question is that many laptops with Intel processors have Intel Centrino Mobile Technology. This helps to improve battery life and performance of the PC in general. If you were building a laptop, I would recommend an Intel Centrino Dual Core processor, but as you are building a desktop, I need to know the make and model of the motherboard, so I may find a suitable processor.

Right, as your buying the motherboard seperately, or are using one you already have, could you possibly give me the make and model, and the part number would be handy if you had it. Thanks.
 
i think processor is the first thing i have to consider when assembling a new pc. i dont know about the model or make of the motherboard. it will be bought after i buy the processor. my simple question is only that then which processors are available in the market with the pricetag i mentioned and considering it, which one should i go with...intel or AMD?
 
You can get an Intel Pentium 4 630 Socket 775 800MHz 2Mb Cache processor capable of 3GHz for $100.

There are a couple of questions for me to ask;

Which operating system are you using
How much RAM do you have
What is the size of your hard drive
What type of case is your pc, ATX, MicroATX, etc

These processor will largely depend on these factors, so post back soon please.
 
as much i do know, the main expense while assembling a pc is of processor, or say the most important also. all other thing are quite relative. i'll be spending abt $230 for the processor, with abt 1GB of ddr2 RAM, linux and windows xp as my operating systems with abt 250 GB hard disk. accordingly a motherboard. You suggest me all the components...thank u
 
Do you have a case that the computer will go in, or do you need one of those aswell? I am going to start building a list, but leave out the processor until you know which tpye case you have, or whether you need one.
 
as u could guess, i've to buy everything. well, whatever u suggest, it'd be nice if u mention there estimated costs too...
 
I have been editing the configurations, changing components and specifications for the last hour or so. I have come to the conclusion that it is impossible to build a system to your specifications for that amount of money. For an Esys EPC-40909UK, it costs £139.98 ($277.83). The specifications can be found by following the link. On top of that, XP Home Edition costs £60 ($119.07). The total comes to £200 ($396.90). The PC needs XP Home, because it only comes installed with Linux.

sorry sorry......... u got it wrong...

i meant....processor should cost $230 and then total pc price (excluding monitor can exceed upto $530. i.e. brand and models of hard disk(160-250 GB), ddr2 ram (1 GB) dvd writer, an entry level graphics card( for the animation work), cabinet.
