which OS would you recommend for gaming?

i would say Windows 2000, cause, XP has alot of extra stuff, and 2000's just nice and plain, i was thinking about putting 2000 on my 240 4 that reason.

The best version of Windows will also depend on when the game was released. In recent years and the obvious newer ones out you will see as the "runs on 2K/XP" type requirement while older games were intended for Fat32 OSs(98, ME).

well im playing the most recent games and i already have another partion with windows 98 on it but i was just wondering about what should i put in my other partition. (for recent games)

You will start to find problems right off there. Just about all new games out are 2K/XP orientated while several older ones could run on 98-ME, 2K, and XP alike without problems. XP also has the option to run a game in a 95 or 98 compatibility mode if running an older Fat32 orientated game or software. The best of the lot new games out would be expecting the NT not FAT32 partition and OS as well.

ok but what im getting at is which version of xp should i get vista, media center, longhorn??? (im going to reformat my other partition but i would like to know which version of windows xp is good for gaming)

Vista is an entirely different version of Windows now coming out. Media Center I thought was mainly for portable units like notebook/laptops. While XP Pro is geared more towards business applications many always find a way to get games running on it without too much problem. Home edition would be more flavored towards a gaming system.

I couldn't imagine Media Edition not being able to run games. But for a desktop system the Home version is geared for gaming as well as other home user type applications. The newer games should already be designed with the idea of being able to run on Media and Pro along with the Home version as well as on the older 2000 version of Windows. For some games a difference may be noticible depending on the version it's run on. The Home version would be more suitable due to being an earlier version then the Media edition allowing more time for game developers to work with it for new releases. The type of games run can also play a role in deciding which is best however. For laptops you would run less demanding games while traveling. You wouldn't generally see the top alien blaster being run with a large demand for graphics on a laptop with the Media edition. :P That might defeat the purpose.

im running on windows xp pro and i heard from my friend that the media center will do me better on playing games, but still the home edition part does make sence >>>HOME<<< edition lol

I'm not actually up on the Media edition since I never use laptops myself here. The Pro version is relatively geared for the professional not home user while still being friendly enough for home use. Media Center is a newer version geared for entertainment. That includes video, music, gaming, etc. to no surprise here. You would have to actually run both under the same circumstances with the same games and programs to see which was actually better suited for what you are looking for.

Media center edition is basically windows xp home with an extra application. All Media Center is is a program that lets you organize your photos, videos and other media files, and watch/record tv if you have a tuner. Media Center edition is not meant for laptops, or as a portable os, it's Home plus extra features.

The Media Center edition is another version just like Tablet PC is. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/default.mspx When you choose the XP link to see a drop down list of the different versions you will see Home at the top followed by Pro 32bit then Media Center followed by Tablet PC with Pro 64bit edtion at the bottom there at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/default.mspx

Yes, it is a different version, but it's not a smaller OS made for laptops!
Media Center is heavier than Home...
XP home and XP pro are different versions, but they only difference is a couple of extra features. Media Center is the same thing. Tablet PC version is stripped down, but home pro and mc are pretty much the same.
When using Media Center edition, it's xp home with a little icon on the desktop that says Media Center. It's just an application. The catch is you can only have the media center application with a xp mc edition. It's no differnet though
