Hey guys!

im making a new computer, and i cant decide weather to install mac(mavericks, or leopard or even
mountain lion) or linux(linux mint, ubuntu, fedora, arch bang, anything!)

I need my pc for mostly for programming , and virtual , machines......

MAC OS must be installed on Apple hardware, otherwise this is illegal.

As far as Linux, what is your knowledge on those OSes?

So install Windows, and use VMware Player for whatever distro you want to use.

Usually those who ask 'what distro will I like best' have near zero knowledge of the underlying OS.

But, im talking about a old version of mac, the old versions are free.
but i like linux becuz i think the windowing system is better....

Well, i like linux distros cuz they are virus proof! and in windows, you have to mess with installing anti virus, ETC.

Linux, well, you can do anything and you cant get viruses....

There have been viruses written for Linux especially this last year. A lot of people forget to understand that as Linux gets more popular so are the Cross Platform Application that run from Windows to Linux. If someone is interested I can find some articles on such as I know the big one right now is a Crytp-o-locker which has been written for Linux that has not been successful yet but new versions in the wild keep popping up which show they are really working to make it possible.

Don't forget Apple users who use Mac OS X (a family of BSD) used to say "we don't got viruses or Malware", last time I checked they have become a popular target despite the small market share they hold. Not to mention the number of viruses written for Android (Linux Based) and numerous routers (most of them run Linux at the core).

I am not saying Linux isn't more secure as it is thanks to the nature of official repositories, speed of patching and how the development of open source works, but lets not be ignorant either. For those who run Linux and are wanting to be safe Sophos makes a great free AV for Linux home users which provides active protection and most distributions do offer a firewall that you can lock down a little further.

As for the OP question, yes Linux is better for virtualization and for programming depends on the platform you write for and your code you are using. If you are writing in C++, Java or Ruby then you will be good but anything in VB stick to Windows.

For virtualization Windows does okay but Linux has always been better at resource management and stability. If using Ubuntu I recommend Virtualbox, Red Hat base then gnome boxes and openSUSE KVM. These will provide about the same functionality as VMware and if you are needing to run a tone of VM's without effecting you rig then look at a separate tower running Xen Server.

At my work we have looked at something like replacing VMware with Microsoft Hyper-V however the worry with Windows is poor resource management and downtime due to Windows Updates and the hell they provide if they partially install, anyone who has ever managed an Windows Server knows what I am talking about. Which if I may mention if you opt for Windows 10 you might want to look at Pro as you cannot manage automatic updates in Home edition and god forbid updates install in the background as they can cause high resource usage or if you don't realize it a automatic restart.

The beauty to Linux is once you get your system configured it stays out of your way, you are not plagued with the auto updates, Windows Account this and that and your default applications getting reset with upgrades to the M$ defaults. Just make sure Linux can due what you want which in this day and age I have not found something it can't other then some games (but that has even improved, thank you Valve).
