which p4 to buy?

Don't forget that the bigger the cpu,the hotter it runs which may require a new case, more case fans, etc. to kepps temps at a normal level. HEAT KILLS CPU'S

and possibly a new psu depending on what you have now.

here are some pix of my fan setup, i have changed the power supply since the pix, it now has a 650w power supply with 2 fans. i want to add the p4 3.4 and 2gb ram. should have enough cooling? and this was a medion computer i bought from costco about 4 years ago!! so it has 3 front intake fans, the side fan is blowing in, and the orange fan blowing out the back. plus the cpu and PSU fans.

650w is definitely enough to push it, unless you have like two 7800gtx's in sli. also dont forget about the all important hsf.

Starting to look like you need a new case that will allow you to add large fans and help you cut on al the noise. As for the CPU the first two 478's are good but the second one is a Prescott which means more heat.

i am going to order the prescott, i want the HT. i dont care about the noise, i keep it in my living room. since i modded the case with all the fans, it runs very cool, if i play far cry for a real long time it won't go above 35. it NEVER does. so what heatsink/fan should i run the the prescott p4 3.4?? and i could always get a few more fans in this biotch if i need to :D

i don't know if that is going to fit, take a look at the pic, my cpu is kinda close to the psu. im gonna open it up and check, since it looks like its the size of a standard cd. any smaller ones that are good? i dont care how loud it is, just want maximum cooling! and i would also prefer something where i won't have to remove the MB.

Never buy the top unit for a specific socket and core type because they're all essentially the same. Buy a lower rated chip with the same core and then overclock it to the speed of the fastest of its line.

I have stock Intel heatsink/fan with my 3.0E(Prescott) andmore than adequate ventilation in my Case(AspireX Navigator) and have no problems.
Overclocking could also be called Overheating, and overheating reducees the life span of cpu's. get the 3.4 if you got the cash.

the old saying "you get whatyou pay for" applies here.

good luck

actually i think theres a 3.72ghz EE out now. anyways, go AMD they run faster and use less power so even if u are using SLI it wont matter.

read the article and check prices. AMD's the way to go.
havent you read CPU 101??
AMD will be better that Intel at some thing and Intel will be better than AMD in other things. it just depends on wat your going to do.
Also he has already decided to get an Intel so there really is no use to try and convince him to get AMD. unless, of course, he asked wether to get AMD or Intel, but he didnt.

all i wanna do is slap the new processor and memory in. i dont want to have to change the MB or anything. i wanna see how long i can keep this baby going for! i already put in a pny verto 6600, so i figure once i up the processor and mem, i should be good for a while.
